There are some dyes that you can spray on, they eat into whatever you apply them to and are completely permanent. On the other hand, there are also a number that are just paints and sit on the surface.

I hear good stuff about the VHT dye that you can buy in cans. I used something called Liquid Plastic made by Bradleys to do my rear seats. They seem to be wearing well so far

http://www.frost.co.uk/liquid-plastic-i ... litre.html
Presumably the Liquid Plastic is one of those paints that "eat" into the surface then? How long has the paint on the rear seats, have seen much usage over the period?

Are you saying the dye aerosols offered in the UK just contain regular paint and nothing that's specifically for vinyl and plastics? You opted for SEM products, presumably these do differ and is the correct paint to use? I'm not looking for OEM colours, custom if anything.
Ye, even the stuff is the same in the U.S - any paint you get that sprays on will just be a coating that sits on the material, whereas a dye actually sinks into the material which is why it needs to go through the process of being bathed. You could probably find a place that does dyeing and drop the parts of... i don't know if they would do the plastics but the seats you could do. - the only thing with the seats is that they have a foam layer sewed into them so not sure how that would react.

Here are some comments i found about the Duplcolour Dye:

I did my dash, center console, front seats, and carpet with the duplicolor dye and they came out amazing. It's been almost 2 months and i still haven't had any issues with anything scratching off. Only problem i have had is the carpet shows some wear near the gas pedal because my foot is always touching it, but for $20 i cant complain.

That's the thing... if it's wearing off on the carpet near the gas pedal... it's just a coating, the pigment of the material hasn't changed. Just to be clear though, those 'interior dye' paints are the ones to use for an interior makeover but i don't like it when marketing teams use the wrong wording.. a dye cannot scratch of because it's changed the pigment, the stuff you buy has just sunken barely into the top layer, which is why i would be uncomfortable using them for seats... for other parts though it's the stuff to use but just keep in mind that it's only a coating. The SEM stuff i used is in the same category as Duplicolour and VHT and it looks the part, did the dash too. However it was able to wipe it off with thinner (had a dry spot right in the middle of the dash, only noticed it last month - ran over with some cloth but ended up getting fibres caught in it, so ran over with some thinner and it soaked away too much, so ended up having to clean the whole part off with thinner. So, from first hand experience i know that it's just a coating. Also had a few small bits peel off on the edges on one of the panels where masking tape that had been left on too long, pulled up a few bits of coating as it was removed, revelaing the tan underneath).

You mention NPD for sourcing parts, a cheaper supplier than F-Body Warehouse or Rick's Camaro's ?
Those places will carry them too from what i can remember, i'm not sure on the price differences but i've used NPD a few times and they are quick at shipping and also do the recipt in such a way that you don't end up paying customs on the shipping cost (bizzare why the government does this).

Hope that helps!

Cheers, Ray
Thanks for the info about the extra customs charge. I wasn't aware of that, have problems with additional duty and or excise on carriage as well then?

It's a shame about these supposed dye products not doing a proper job. I guess the only way to make sure an original or repro part is correctly coloured is to have it dipped professionally. However the Duplicolour seems to be working out well. You mentioned a little colour wear on the carpet, what did you use to re-colour it?

Sadly someone in the past has re coloured some of the plastic interior parts. I reckon all of this will need to be removed before any form of painting can commence? Also did you use a primer at all?

Sorry that was a probably a bit confusing - i copied a quote from a different forum. They were talking about using dye paints (duplicolour dye in that case) and just wanted to share how it's effectively a flexible coating vs. going into the material and changing its pigmentation. In my case i found it a more solid solution to buy a new carpet and seats - the prep time, cost of materials etc. to recoat isn't far off, plus you know that you won't have any worries in future about flaking, wearing etc. By all means give it a go if you like to trial and error - maybe it will turn out pretty good and last a while.

It would most depend how good / bad of a job they did. My interior has been painted black over tan, with white primer used. They hadn't done a great job - it was flaking in some parts and not enough paint on others. I used nitromors paint remover and got rid of the old coating as it was piled on a bit thick and has runs here and there. Once cleaned, i scuffed, cleaned again and isntead of using primer, use a plastic adhesion promoter on the the plastic... it does the same job as primer it's just clear and designed to form a strong bond with the plastic, then shoot the colour ontop of that while it's still tacky.

You can get all of the interior plastics as repro items and in all sorts of different colours, so see how much the cost would be with shipping etc and weigh up the amount of work + durability of the result vs. a new part. In some cases it may work out a better in the long with replacement parts in the desired colour. I need a new rear plastic panel actually... will have a look tonight at what that would cost.

Hope that helps!

Thanks once again for sharing some knowledge there :) I'll probably look at none OEM colours, not too keen on the regular colours that are available. It's either a black and purple interior or black and white that I'll be going for. The parts that are none salvageable will be scrapped, the others will have to be repainted. What did you use to clean up your plastic/vinyl parts? Also you mention plastic adhesion promoter, can you remember who manufactured this and where you got it?

Aside from re-painting interior parts, did you you replace the foam in the rear seats? Mine are pretty worn and are sagging, I'm guessing this is the likely cause rather than springs wearing out?

That's very kind of you :) Thank you very much indeed :) Sadly I'm looking for a new vinyl rear seats, or cover as I'll need to match them to vinyl or leather front seats. Much obliged nevertheless :)

I replaced my fronts with some modern recliner buckets as the originals have so little support, and managed to find a matching black vinyl rear..

Certainly! Those front seats are no good at all. Ok, period and of it's time but they don't cut the mustard compared with what's one offer these days. Do you have any photo's or links to the one's you bought/fitted?

I was wondering if aftermarket rear bucket seats are now available for our cars? I have had look via the net with no success so far.

Here's what my fronts look like.. Can't remember the make.. Eagle something.. bought them from a guy who had them in his car (jap turbo thing i think) but was upgrading to proper FIA seats to go competing.

I reckon you get small rear aftermarket buckets to fit, but it would be a lot of trial and error measuring, and making a subframe to hold them.. Kit car type ones, without headrests maybe.

Thanks for the photo :) they look the part don't they! Were they reasonably easy to fit?

I think I'll give the rear bucket seats a miss. As you say sounds like a great deal of trial and error. I used to have a Monaro VXR before the Camaro, I really liked the bucket seats in the rear. I thought a manufacturer of aftermarket parts may of produced such seats for our classic cars. Hopefully in the future...
