Unfortunately my recently purchased Camaro is void of the necessary jack. The wheel brace and spare space saver is there but that's about it.

Ideally I'd like a jack that's suitable for raising the car to a point where I can place an axle stand underneath if that's possible. I've got a trolley jack in the garage but not too keen on lugging that around in the boot. Also where are the jacking points of the car? No owners manual either!

Car Details:1986 Camaro, bought into Spain by me in 1993.
305 replaced by a 355, 750 Demon carb, RPM AirGap intake, Brodix heads, Hedman Hedders, 3" Flowmaster exhaust.
Wheels are Summit aluminium 5 spokes, tyres are 245 rear 225 front BF Goodrich.
B/M transmission, battery relocated to the rear, GoodMark 4" cowl steel hood.
Location:Spain East Coast
So you want a stock style jack and an axle stand in the boot ?
You jack your car high enough with that type of jack to get an axle stand under it and your asking for trouble.
Those kind of jacks are for getting just enough room to change a wheel, any higher you´ll have to jack in the centre of the car, front or rear axles.
As for the handbook they´re pretty vague, go for something like this a Chevrolet Camaro V8: 1970 thru 1981 (Haynes Repair Manuals) http://www.amazon.com/Chevrolet-Camaro- ... hop+manual

or, and I prefer Chilton´s....Camaro 1967-81 (Chilton's Repair & Tune-Up Guides)

Car Details:79' camaro road & track day toy. 383 stroker, 5 speed TKO trans, lots of suspension stuff, 13" Vette brakes, 18" wheels.
Location:Luton
Just get decent quality scissor type jack and jack it from the axle at the rear, and under the lower wishbone at the front if ever needed...as you would with a trolley jack.. :thumbup:

Thanks for the links there :) just purchased both of the publications. Although buying from Amazon USA was gonna be damned expensive! Luckily they were available through Amazon UK although American sellers. Shame the taxes and carriage were so expensive, the manuals were dirt cheap on Amazon USA.

Ok, thanks for the info there :) So unlike more recently made motor vehicles there's no actual specific jacking points? i.e near the body seams

Not on a 2nd gen that i've ever seen..
Easiest way to jack on the body is on the front subframe as it's the most solid bit of metal on the car, and easily accessible from the side.

Yep, what chevystu says. I jack up the front via the subframe. It's long enough to get a jack under there and then place an axle stand. For the rear, i place a jack under the diff and then place axle stands under the leaf spring mount plates.

I believe the rear can also be jacked up via the big rear impact steel bar.

The manuals should have a picture of your jacking points.

Mine is up in the air at the moment, stands under the front A arms and
in the rear under the frame just in front of the trailing arms fixing point.

I get the front up first using the middle of the cross member, place ramps under the wheels.
Then I jack the rear under the diff. placing axle stands under the axle.
I jiggle this around using the trolley jack until I have the working space I need.

Personally with today´s traffic I would´nt change a wheel by the roadside.

Taken from my Chilton 3rd Gen manual, same for most sub framed vehicles.
