Little update - I repainted the cowel and rear window atttaching round thing by the trunk lid all in black. They got scratched up as i was sanding, plus the cowel had some dirt when painting originally, ran a tack cloth over it but it wasn't cured enough so some fluff engrained itself, so sanded that all down and repainted on Sunday. Also painted the heater housing as it also got scuffed up from putting fenders on and off etc. That will get masked up and then i can start sanding. Put guide coat on everything on Sunday, so the sanding is just waiting for me to pull my finger out now...

Finally got around to sanding. Started on the fender with 320 and by the time i got done removing the guide coat... breakthroughs. Ugh. Means i have to reprime. Again. And sand. Again. This is never gonna end.

Sanded the other fender and same thing :wall:

I don't get it. I sanded the fenders in 80 grit with a long block.
I then added filler where necessary, then sanded again with a long block in 120 grit.
I then used glazing putty on everything, guide coated it, then sanded in 180 again with a long block.
Then primered it, guide coated, sanded with 320 on a medium block. Shouldn't have had breakthroughs but ok.
Reprimer, guide coated and sanded with medium block in 320. Still breakthroughs.

wtf. I can understand it if i didn't prep well but ffs, what else could i have done, i've been using the right tools, not cheap sandpaper, havn't rushed. Used guide coat along the way. What's the effing point in trying and taking your time, doing it 'right' if it still turns out crap :x I have to reprimer both fenders now and who know what else. And then resand. Hoping that it wont break through yet again. Plan was to sand the fenders and boot lid today, paint them in colour tomorrow, sand another couple of panels, paint the next day and do it bit by bit. I can't even get past the primer stage. Getting so f'in sick of this crap. Doubt i have enough primer to do more than 2 or 3 panels and doubt i can get any at this time of year either (places being closed / delivery times being skewed etc.). Shouldn't have to be priming 3 times. Finally have some days off but guess it's just a waste again.

I know it won't be the same satisfaction if you did it all yourself.... but would it worth throwing the whole lot at a body shop to finish at this point, now all the really hard work is done... ? :oops:

Breakthrus are inevitable - just stop as soon as you break through - if the rest of the panel is good just spot prime them again and crack on with the top coat :D

80 grit is way too coarse apart from roughing out filler though to be fair. I never used coarser than 120 - and mostly 180/240 for the final shaping as it's more controllable.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Ye i did think about passing it over to someone else to finish but i don't think i could. I'm too subborn lol. The project has been about more than just the car to me, it's been about taking on something and being able to see it through, at almost any cost it seems. I wanted to learn new things and be able to craft some skills (not necessarily master :lol: ) so i think that i would be cheating myself by not finishing it. The frustrating part i think in it's simplest form is not being able to do something. I read, i watched, i listened, i understood, i questioned things, i tried again and tried to get better, so i think that's what gets to me, is putting in the effort but not seeing a result. I can understand if i half arsed it and didn't come out great, sure, blame the lack of skills and preparation. I guess it's just part of the learning curve. I'm gonna keep at it and just keep p*ssing myself off i think. I've been thinking about it and having come this far, i would prefer to have a less than great finish that i did, than a great finish that someone else did... if that makes sense :crazy:

I took some pics but can't get them off my phone until i'm home, so i will post them up... It looks like what you're saying flakmonkey - breakthroughs that are small enough to patch but as it's in 320 (to speed up the blocking process) i would need to go over with 600 and then i fear that would cause new breakthroughs after having spot primed. I switched tactic on the fornt bumper, using a shorter and slightly softer block (the rectangle durablock one that is 12" long and about 2 or 3" wide and another small more flexible rubber block that goes around the curves better) so that it would conform to the imperfections better vs. breaking thru. It seemed to go ok and just got a few small break throughs which can definitely be spot primed.

I will reprime the fenders and boot lid and then go over with 600 instead, on the smaller less rigid block and then hope that still keeps the surface relatively straight. I actually found a low spot in the driver fender, by the front, above the indicator light so had to add glazing putty to get that straight. So in a way, kind of glad it happened but also not sure how i missed that in the first place, so kinda annoyed that it got missed, but also glad that i caught it before it was too late.

If the weather holds out, i plan (slight chance of tonight) to reprimer and spot primer those 4 panels asap, let it sit for a couple of days, 600 sand then get them in colour by / around the new year. Then i will start on the next batch, probably the doors, rear bumper and hood. Again, i will stick with 600 on the softer shorter block and hopefully no more breakthroughs!

Sorry to hear things are not going to plan Ray .
Without pictures or being able to see your car it is hard to pinpoint where the error is in your prep .
One thing I have never been fond of is glasing putty or the product termed knifing stopper .These products seem very slow to harden and also seem to shrink ...
I have done all my surface repairs in a lower price U-Pol Smooth 7 filler and finished it in U-Pol finish grade in the plastic flexible pack ( finer grade, flows out nicely and sets in a decent time )
Once I was reasonably happy with my filler I sprayed the whole car in epoxy 2K primer ( waterproof and gives great adhesion )
Next some High Build 2K primer in a light grey ( 2 heavy coats with a decent time to dry between )
Now the critical part ! I mixed some black 2K with my light grey High Build primer to tint it darker and applied a heavy coat ...let it harden for 3 days and flatted it with a rigid and a soft sander with 320 .
Found some larger low spots and a couple of smaller areas that showed imperfections .
Used U-pol spray can Hi-five in dark grey on these and continued priming and sanding with the longer blocks and 320 then finally a shorter soft block and 400 paper .
Finally got it to a stage where I was happy to give it another full coat of un-tinted light grey 2K primer ... It was a lot of work and I have called in a very good painter to give me a quote and take it to the next stage .He was happy with my efforts but will still have to make a couple of small corrections to my work which came as no shock as I am not in the trade and he is a master of the craft .
I have painted some cars and done some local repair work on some more and would say that it is probably the hardest thing for the non-pro to get right ,but satisfying if you get it right 8-)
With my project I really wanted a dark blue metallic and felt it would be hard if not impossible to get the standard right with my equipment in a large garage instead of having a professional shoot it in a booth with the best equipment ...
Hope some of this is some help Ray and hopefully you will be on the road without any more setbacks . Hope you and all the members enjoy Christmas and New Year .

Thanks for the help, i haven't heard about U-Pol Smooth 7 filler or U-Pol finish grade. I've used Upol Easylite (green stuff) and then gone over with liquid gold (that's the glazing putty stuff i used). Seen a few different types of Upol filler out there, not sure really what the difference is between them.

Here's a couple of pics of the fender. Thought i took a pic of the bootlid but that seems to have disappeared. You can see at the front of the fender where the additional filler was added for the low spot.

I just used normal U-Pol filler for the bulk and then U-pol FantaStic for finishing. Didn't need to use any glazing putties as I sprayed it all with Green-Ti afterwards before a final coat of Epoxy then top coats.
