What year is the is the part I should be looking for with regards to Iroc Z or GTA box
From what i understand, any 3rd gen box, so 82 -92. Give Rocky (American Tecnhique) on here a shout as he breaks and fixes 3rd gens, so may have one in stock. Based in Watford so not too far from you i assume. Last i saw he had a full GTA in for breaking.

Cheers!

Ray
Thanks for the info there Ray. :)

I'm thinking it's possibly better to buy a brand new part, rather than risk a worn steering box. Not entirely sure what to do?

I wouldn't even think about steering boxes until every thing else had been eliminated first... and that's alot of other components

Give that try and then see how it is. If it's still the same, then reading through all the comments, it sounds like you have what Sportsroof mentioned:
Quote:
Steering box has a 'tight spot' in the middle of it's sweep, which should correspond with the steering wheel central AND front wheels pointing dead ahead. All happy then, yes?
...you are driving straight but are away from the tight spot so there is play, and when you try to make a small correction, there may be slight resistance (the tight spot) which you have to then fight with as it's usually right where you don't want it to be so you end up sawing at the wheel try to go straight! Maybe a bit exaggerated to illustrate the problem but you get the idea. Plus the steering boxes can usually be adjusted up to eliminate play.
Cheers, Martin

I am at times "sawing" at the wheel to maintain the car in a straight line. When cornering at regular speeds, I find the steering input can be way too much. for the angle of the corner also. It's like a large dead spot...and then steering reacts and it's too much of an input.
You mention that steering boxes can be adjusted, how do you go about adjusting things in this area?

Sounds like you'll be needing instructions on how to adjust the steering box... be good if it has enough adjustment in it that you don't need to buy a replacement part.

This one is for a Jeep but it may be similar:

From 4 minutes on it runs through some good general diagnostic checks:

Agreed 100%
Diagnose, don't guess, then fix.

Ahhh...well that's another problematic area. If the wheels are turned from dead centre, any angle further on from circa 20-30 degrees (and not it's worse on dry surfaces) and the there's a loud screeching noise coming from the front end. Being stationery and it's more so than when manouvering.

The mechanic commented that both pulleys ought to have another belt since there's another groove on both of them. Possibly a secondary belt ought to be employed?? I did check the fluid on the pump it's not low and it seems pretty clean, the belt is taught also. Could the pump be at fault then? Perhaps the belt is slipping? Would these issues have an effect on the steering at normal road speeds?
