Was out for a drive in London, lots of traffic at one point where it was standstilll for ages, car was getting to 100c but with the electric fans that kick in, it stays around there. Noticed the oil pressure was starting to drop too. Finally got moving, temp dropped a bit, stopped the car for a few mins, set off again then while driving around a corner felt the steering get heavy, then the brakes started to not really work - Car had stalled. Waited a minute, started it and idle was really lumpy, kinda like rumpity rumpity rRrRruPity rumpity. Let it sit for about half an hour, started it up and it struggled a bit to turnover, then the idle wasn't as bad, temp was about 80c. Drove very steadily home and by weird coincidence a friend was driving back from london too so caught up and followed me home. Wasn't hard as i was doing about 45, taking it very easy. Temp was back to its normal position, about 70c after a while, oil pressure back to where it usually was. Started driving at normal speeds and seemed ok.

... what happened

Can overheating cause stalling? Not sure how it overheated either as the fan was kicking in keeping the temp away from boiling, according to the gauge.
Scary losing all power like that

Could be worth checking your thermostat just in case it is not operating correctly .
If the car gets really hot sometimes you can get fuel percolation but I think that is unlikely .
Could be worth checking the water hoses as it is possible for them to partially collapse and reduce the water flow...and last but not least the water pump if it is old .

I've had that pig of a problem quite often, everything just fine, sit in traffic and when I can go the car stops...
I had this on my original 305 with QJet, 355 with QJet, 355 with 650 Speed Demon, 355 with 750 Speed Demon.
God only knows why it occurs.
I check the timing, fuel bowl levels and mixture, and it's A okay until the next time.
This car has never liked idling for long periods in traffic.
Recently I had an engine vibration and poor performance, did all the above then decided to re adjust the valves.

Last time I did it the workshop book way, basically because i hate this job.
Number one at TDC adjust the specified valves then rotate motor one full revolution, number six TDC
and do the rest.
This time I did it by firing order, starting with number one at TDC and rotating the motor 90º at a time.

This gave me a much smoother motor and much more lively too.

Could of just been the ghosts of Halloween, playing tricks on you for sins in a former life....

It's a TPI, i don't know if that makes a difference when it comes to issues with fuel getting too hot... i've heard that it can be an issue with carbs? I wonder if it was something related to fuel getting too hot / getting to a vapour state or something then.
Sounds like a hell of a job! I'm sure i would mess that up pretty well lol, but it sounds like something that's worthwhile doing. Assuming it hasn't been touched in 27 years, i'm sure there's a chance that the valves may be slight out. I need to do the valve stem seals at some point, so may be a good idea to do them at the same time over a weekend. Still get a slight smell of oil / petrol through the exhaust, so may be related.
It's the original one still, so 27 years on it. Hoping it's functional, not sure if there's a way to know how it's holding up?

Used the car twice now and seems ok again... gauges read like they used to, so hoping that it was a one off due to having sat in traffic in one spot for so long.

He's often at the Petrolhead Nirvana meets at the Ace, and he's come on a few tunnel runs in his old Gallardo, also has a McLaren MP12 now..
