Afternoon all, my recently purchased 1981 Generation 2 Camaro comes with a modified ZZ4 engine.

Sadly the starter keeps sticking and doesn't allow me to turn over the engine properly. So the option is to get it rebuilt or buy brand new one.

Can anyone advise who rebuilds these or if not where to buy a new or reconditioned unit?

Dump the stocker and get one of these from Summit,
I´ve had one for a long time now loadsa torque, and they´re titchy too.

I've got a Hitachi mini starter from Real Steel after the standard one gave up.. Lovely bit of kit..

Sounds good , excuse my ignorance but will they simply bolt on to ZZ4 with no other required parts? Also, since they produce so much more torque will this put a drain on the battery?

Any starter for small block gen 1 (up to 93') chevy should fit.. There are a few variation but in general they're pretty much all the same.

The ZZ4 is high performance engine, but I don't think the compression is more than 9:1. High compression is what what makes the starter work harder, killing a standard one. My engine is 10:1 and the high torque mini start I have is still fine after about 20k miles and 4 years. (actually cracked the casing on my standard virtually new one on my motor, pic below)

Apparently the compression on my ZZ4 is now 10.5:1 according to modifications made by previous owner, ultra thin metal head gasket I'm told.

Will the stater motor you mentioned accommodate a 10.5:1?

10.5:1 may be a push:

BYPSL100 1.4hp, 12 position, up to 10:1 £131.86
BY9000 1.63hp, 3 position £155.39
BYAJG380 3.4hp, most powerful of type £230.27
BY9509 LS1 type starter 200ft lbs £211.26
BY9409 LS1 type starter 250ft lbs £260.58

"These provide far more torque than the std unit. The PSL100 is smaller
& lighter, and can be turned through 360 degrees. These require a
"straight" bolt pattern. 153/168 ring gears ok. These starters are very
difficult to fit unless you can see the engagement of the pinion, into the
ring gear. Also, you will need to protect the starter from exhaust heat.
Either- wrap the starter or the headers with a heat resistant bandage.
Heat will destroy the starter. Oil dripping on the starter will also cause
failure. Check the engagement in both directions- 1. The pinion should
engage 1/2 to 2/3 the way across the ring gear, not all the way across. 2.
Check the shimming information below, regarding depth of engagement."

I'd go for number 2, BY9000.

I expected all sorts of trouble fitting it, shims etc.. but it bolted straight up with no issues, took 10 mins once the car was on axle stands.
