Hi,

I’ve just bought a 1999 ‘T Reg’ Camaro 3.8L, euro spec, and was looking for some advice. (I’m based in the UK by the way).
The rubber belt which goes around the alternator and various other ‘gears’, smooth one side and with ‘indented lines’ running the length of the belt on the other.
My question is this, is this only the fan belt, or a fan belt and timing belt combined?
Is there a separate timing chain elsewhere?
This looks like it needs replaced but didn’t know what it was for sure!!

Any help would be appreciated.

I’ll upload some photos when I get it cleaned properly, I only got it home late last night and it was raining almost the whole 350 mile drive!

hi there mate, i have a 97, and i cant see why it be any different, the belt is just the drive for all your accessory's , alternator, water pump , a/c etc the timing is separate and would be a chain i believe and like any timing belt/ chains they are always behind guards,, if you think it needs replacing then replace i had one go and it took out the two pulley wheels as well, that belt is the last thing you want to snap when you are far from home

You’re quite right, it’s the drive belt. I was able to check in the parts manual I downloaded from this site 
Where do you buy your parts from if you don’t mind me asking?
I’m trying to find a reasonable priced source, and one that will do mail order, as I’m based in Scotland!! Nothing much on the American side up here in the wilds!

however do shop around your local automotive as well ive found unless you are desperate you can get parts from your local autos like, http://www.patwilliams.co.uk/ which is local to me, i was able to get two new idler pulleys , they are the same as the ones on a pug and fiat and they cld even get me a new serpentine belt if i needed one there are pros and cons to this on one hand a belt wld cost 30 quid but from yer local auto u may pay £11, and on the other hand if we dont use the American suppliers we cld loose them , then we mite end up stuffed when we need major parts
