so I did a custom upgrade of my ls1 brakes to the C5 discs for that extra inch....

When the conversion was done did you use the C5 calipers only and discs. Or did you also use the C5 abutment brackets. Then the conversions brackets also, I presume you used everything to change the lt1 brakes so it makes no sense that the caliper is soooo far from the disc. The discs are the correct ~12.8 inch diameter ones right? Only other thing is that the brackets were for the ZO6 rotors which are 13.3 inch dia if i remeber from memory, dont quote me on it ;)

OK - all this was 2010, so this is all to the best of my recollection :)

I believe I used all C5 parts, callipers, discs and abutment. Then used 2 different 'adaptor' brackets.
I found some more photos - see how shiny those abutment brackets were - bet they don't look like that now.

1 - here is the second conversion bracket - a 'proper' retail overly priced and then add import and vat item. these were from BMR and definitely claim to be c5 disks. I sourced these thinking the first slightly home made items were wrong:

Image

as you can see from the next picture it didn't all line up properly

the outside of the pad didn't touch the disc and the inside of the disk wasn't swept

I went around in circles trying to work out where the issue was. I'm sure I checked the disc size, the abutment were US ebay but all appeared right and I actually saw the corvette that that discs & callipers were off.

I posted here and there - I'm surprised there isn't an old thread here actually, but there was certainly one on a US board.

In the end I 'moded' the first 'home made' brackets to move the calliper in. I'm pretty sure that when this was done the pads was fully engaged with the disk (as you can see it was only 5mm required).

This was my family car in which I drove my wife and 2 kids around in and as a qualified mechanical engineer, I was happy that it was all fine.

I'm not convinced that the warping is due to this issue, I suspect its just wear and tear. The discs were from a guy who had upgraded to 6 pots on his corvette, so had probably toasted the standard brakes first. I guess is that new c5 discs and pads will see this all fine again. Certainly I found them the dogs and massively better than the standard - fiesta size - standard ls1 items.

It still remains a mystery to me why the standard bracket(s) didn't seem to fit and I would love to get to the bottom of it.

the red conversion brackets are still in the garage and a LS1 camaro sits my drive with ***** little brakes. Alas the 15 wheels will have to be upgraded if I do it all.

Paul - are you sure you won't sell it back to me

The discs are 12.99" in diameter, im not up for selling it really after researching how many they made Jimbo (but if I do you can have first refusal) they made 100 identical ones with the LT4 but a lot less with the LT1 , besides which I paid the guy wht you sold it to him for and it needs a few quid throwing at it to make it right, I was quoted £1300 just to sort out the bodywork as the bumpers and splitter have all crazed , the lacquer is peeling off of the spoiler and the rims are all flaky, then there's the brake issues, and I'm not sure if the noise is gearbox or clutch related........ So I'm gonna be in it for around another £2.5k over the purchase price :!:

Just checked out your photo's, it had a towbar?

Those don't look anything like the caliper brackets that are on it now! They are in red oxide primer and I don't recall seeing the strengthening bar between them either Jimbo, I'll get a photo when they get removed and re-fettled next week, if you know anybody with a vette that was pre 1997 I have some expensive brake pads to sell...............!!

jimbo, you mean you've got an lt1 with single pot brakes ? LS1 (98+) have twin pot calipers similar to corvete but discs are 1 inch smaller, I has 18 inch rims so needed 'bigger' brakes to look the part too.

if the discs are 12.99 inch then that's correct. Strange how the bmr brakets dont fit. I have some home made brakets my dad made, he's an engineer and we did the same and slotted the side to allow adjustment then welded up in place when they fitted correct.

I got these as a set to set the car up, the pads are ok for everyday driving but fade with more vigours driving ;)

cheap to sort the front, you dont really gain anything from slotted and drilled rotors unless really using the car on track, as they 'clean' the pads...which in reality means wear them down faster, then the drilled holes rust and the discs become weak !

Oh how I wish I knew this last week ! The callipers that it has at present are twin pot and if they were the brackets Jimbo left on it then somebody since has played with it, I have a vision of several different people all removing the callipers to figure it out and just replacing them afterwards as there were loose and rounded bolt heads, fingers crosses it'll all be right next week though

sorry dude, not been on here for a while :S

the hardest thing I found when making them was actually the offset to get the abutment bracket to sit in the middle of the disc, I got some stainless steel spaces made up by a friend after making 2 aluminium mock-ups

forgot to say, on my car, the abutment bracket closest to the centre of the disc is over the angled bit of the disc, not clear from it as on your pics. So just needs moving in a little ;)

Sounds like your having fun. :shifty:

I had mine at a local specailist for a brake fluid change yesterday. He couldn't get the bleed nipples undone on the front calipers. C5 calipers like yours. Nighmare. Eventually manage to bleed the system front the back brakes. All sorted now and feel better for a fluid change.

I remember being told mine was Z06 spec. Must be I have the bigger discs like Maudys.

I had the Lt1 auto before this car and going from that to the 6 speed LS1 with the Vet brake is light and day. This car stops better than any car I've driven (E46 M3s etc)

On a side note I saw this car when it was in a previous owners care. M54 probably 5 years ago. I remember thinking how bizarre it was to see another 4th gen and a SS model. It was definitely this car as it had a tow bar fitted. I did a fly past to let the owner hear what a proper exhaust sounded like! (corsa catback, I miss that sound)

hey Dunc,

mines just c5 spec as the discs were much cheaper, plus only a little difference in c5 to zo6 disc size so I was happy with c5 setup.

Hows the blue car treating you, can remember talking to Brian a lot before he bought it (and the previous owner too ;) )

Must have had a girl exhaust on it then, somebody has fitted a stainless system with twin "resonators" and it sounds the bizz now, 2000-2400rpm is my favourite tone :-) it's a beautifull car that had been loved and cherished before the guy I brought it from got it but has spent a few years being neglected and needs some time and money invested to bring it back up to standard again
