A slipped disc for that many years? Blimey, you certainly did man through it after all that time! Our bodies haven't evolved enough for the upright posture thing. I saw something the other day about exoskeletons being developed for use in day to day to work to help with the human body. Can't remember which company was testing it, it was quite compact and ideal for jobs that require lifting i.e warehouse work etc. Will need to find some more info on it. Maybe that's the way in the future to avoid (and maybe deal) with these type of life long injuries.

Neil - have you thought about trying to expense a James Bond style gun that pops up from the bonnet? That way it's always aimed ahead and you can take your time getting out, i doubt anyone will want to run seeing that setup in their mirror lol. Are you in a pickup cab for work? I can imagine being in a lower vehicle constantly getting in and out being a stress point on the knees :(

In project news, the unthinkable has happened... the shell has primer on it! Spent the entire weekend prepping - masking, cleaning, catching pinholes out. Finally got the primer on last night but ran out of time to do the doors. 1 400ml cup of primer (5:1 ratio, so 300ml primer, 60ml hardener, 40ml thinner (10%) ) was able to cover the shell, including the door jambs plus just a bit left over to do some of the parts - spoiler sides and mirrors. Did 3 coats and finished about 11, so didn't want to start on the doors, trunk lid and spoiler centre as i would have finished somewhere around midnight and was already up past that, cleaning the spray gun and doing a bit of cleaning up. I will be spraying the remaining parts on thursday as i'm at work all week (nice and tired today!). Would have kept going but the compressor was a bit loud, would be great to have one of those screw compressors :) Using a HVLP and upgraded to 3/8 hose line, so the tanks drain at a reasonable rate, especially with the 1.7 tip.

Mostly looks ok... a few areas with pinholes popped up so i will need to add some glaze to those bits. Only one area of concern on the drivers rear quarter... the body line isn't straight. I used tape as a line on all other parts, but for some reason thought i would getaway with it on this section. Not so much. I was planning on a 2nd stage or primer so no big thing. This weekend i will be hitting the primer with guide coat, 320 and 600. Should end up with 1 to 1.5 coats of primer after sanding with some breakthroughs, so will then add 2 more coats but of primer surfacer... so a lot thinner and it will lay down smoother (recommended tip size is 1.3 for the surfacer - this lot went on with a 1.7 tip). Then hit that 2nd stage with 800 ready for base coat. Will add some pics when i can get them from the phone.

Any ideas when your aiming to have it done and roadworthy? Was that a dumb question? :-) if anybody is based anywhere near hertfordshire there is an event on Sunday in rickmansworth called "classics on the green" which is accompanied by a steam fair, the last two events there have had a brilliant turn out with a huge variety of different cars

Yes it's definitely a milestone to have reached, so there is some light in the tunnel... the heavy work (metal work / welding / grinding / rough body work) chapter has moved onto the finessing stage now.

Let me know what days after work you're free - i work off the A40 so only took me about 20 minutes to get Ace Cafe, so can pop over one evening - would love to go for a ride in the new motor :) Are you having a lot of fun with it then?

lol not a dumb question... just me being dumb about the project and the work involved. The most up to date plan is to primer the doors and boot tonight, meaning that everything will have had 3 coats of primer. Got tomorrow off, so will be sanding the whole day, hoping that by Saturday lunch everything will be sanded to either 320 or even 600 (if there are no breakthroughs at the 320 stage). Then on Saturday i can reprime with surfacer primer, then on sunday hit it with 600 (if not already in 600) and 800.

Then on the first part of the weeknights i can patch in a few bits with colour... i.e firewall needs a respray as it had some chips, so will use the single stage from last time (no sanding required on this part so won't have the breakthrough issues like before). Then the latter part of the week evenings i can start to hit it with base coat clear coat. I won't do the whole thing in one... split it into 3 sections i.e shell is 1 section, doors and fenders are section 2, bumpers and hood and section 3. So hopefully either by the weekend, or during the weekend it will all be painted. Then i can start installing the door locks, handles, side glass etc.

Then it gets messy because i'm away with work for a week (including the weekend :( ) and then my friends from the U.S are visiting for two weeks, so in total there will be a good 3 weeks where nothing will happen :( so i really need get everything painted before that 3 weeks of events. Then i will be getting the front and back glass installed as there are dependencies on that... i have subframe connectors that need to be welded in but the brake likes and fuel lines are quite close to the welding areas and i know you can cover them etc but i don't want to risk it (pipes are empty as they've been replaced). So i need to get the final weight into the car, in order to do the sfc's. Whilst waiting for the glass to go in (could be a week or two for a booking) i will be doing the reassmbley of the panels and then do the exhaust and repaint a couple of interior panels that got damaged. That should take us to the end of October, then it will be a case of topping up the fluids once the sfc's are welded in, finalising any parts and then calling it a day. So likely, somewhere at the start or middle of November?

Rickmansworth / Hertfordshire isn't too far from me, so will have to try and make meet - is it once a month?

Did you go yesterday? I've been locked away in the garage nonstop all weekend!

Everything is in primer now, managed to then sand down with 320, the hood, bumpers and shell. Found a few pinholes so will need to fill those tonight. Had a few breakthroughs into the lower layers , kind of expected that, so will be putting another 3 coats of high build on during the middle of this week. Need to post some pics!

In the meantime, some pics of progress:

I etch primed the bare metal areas first, but didnt have the camera in the room while painting. 3 coats of high build max meyer 3011 primer then went on, using 1.7 tip HVLP.

sanded with 320 wet:

Got some breakthroughs, i expected this so will give it another 3 coats this week. Need to attend to a few pinholes first and wet sand a few edges where there is still guide coat left (sprayed black guide coat on all the surfaces to know when to stop sanding).

Once reprimed, i will guide coat, hit quickly with 320 just to speed things up, but leaving some guide coat on. Then will hit with 600 and once a tiny bit of gc is left, i will hit with 800, ready for base coat. This should leave 2-3 total coats of primer on the panels.

Hi Ray, that's looking good mate. As it's a solid finish ie non metallic, I'd be inclined to leave it in a 600 finish prior top putting on the top coat as it'll offer more grip then 800. :thumbup:

What lump and tranny is going in ? Is it a resto, race car, cruiser etc. when it's finished? Any thoughts on final colour?
