Just to add to this post.
TBI was introduced as an almost direct replacement for the carb, simple economics when you are building cars. The throttle linkage, fuel supply and wiring harness don't have to be moved much to fit a TBI.
But the drawback with TBI, and a carb, is that it's almost impossible to get the same petrol air charge equally into each cylinder. Imagine pushing down on the pedal which will open the butterfly and put more fuel into the airstream. Unless the intake runners are the exact same length one or more cylinders will get fuel before the others, plus it takes a finite time from pressing the pedal for fuel to leave the injectors, mix with the air and travel to the intake valve.
Now move onto TPI. The only thing in the intake system is air, and the fuel is injected directly into each cylinder negating any of those problems.
And this is before we get to the problems of carbs and TBI systems where fuel vaporization relies on pressure and temperature.
Hope it made sense because it's 6 am here and I've only had one mug of coffee
