Ok, so found a company near me that supplies all sorts of PPE equipment and they definitely have the right ones in stock, so i can pick them up tomorrow lunchtime as they are only around the corner from work. Going to aim for a Thurs / Fri after work primer session in that case

This the company i came across, prices seem pretty decent too:

Front half is primered :D

So i got the mask cartridges and pre filters etc. The main carbon filters fit spot on, went with A2 rated filters (ones before were A1) as A2 are rated up to 5,000 particles per minute vs the A1's at 1,000. The prefilters did not fit :problem: they were too deep, so must have been P1 filters in there before, i went with P3 as they are rated higher in terms of their use. They made the adapter stick out just a bit too far to allow it to clamp on, so wrapped some tape around to hold them on.

Didn't set the gun up quite right - found this out half way through... there was too much material delivery, i adjusted but not enough - when spraying you could see the droplets vs. a fine spray on the panel and it had some texture to it, so weren't as atomised as they should have been - i thought it was an air supply / atomisation thing, so opened the fluid / air ratio mix as much as possible but didn't make much of a difference. About half way through i realised i should back off the material delivery a lot more, then it started to spray a lot better and lay down better.

3 coats of Max Meyer 3011 high build primer on the front and back bumper, the hood, the rear trunk filler panel, both fenders, spoiler and some of the steel braces that are in the engine bay. I then painted the inside of the panels in black satin, along with the steel braces, the radiator cover panel and the inner arches (the latter 2 were red but as they weren't perfect, the gloss made them look quite messy).

Noticed a few pinholes in some spots so i will go over those spots with glazing putty, then guide coat the panels and sand down in 320 or 600. I will spot prime these area's when priming the shell of the car. I'm not going for arrow straight anymore - well, i will aim for it, but i don't want to use a long block and have loads of break throughs and have to reprime and block the whole car again - i would rather have it completed sooner, than worry about very slight waves at this point and reprime etc.

I will let the panels breathe for the next week, to make sure the primer is thoroughly cured. During this time i will start on batch 2 - the shell, trunk lid and mirrors. No repairs that need doing as such - the trunk is a bit wavey so i plan to skim that with filler, but the rest needs some glazing putty in a few areas and then sanding with 120 then 180/ 240.

Will add pics tonight, don't have the lead with me that goes from my phone to laptop to get the pics off it.

Cheers!

Ray

Cheers Nige! Yes definitely pleased, it's a good milestone to have reached. Was supposed to have today off but had a couple of important meetings to attend that couldn't be moved :( Was gonna really try and prime the shell this weekend (what you see in the pic of the car outside the garage), not sure who likely that is now. I have to skim the bootlid as it's got some waves, need to pop out to get some filler... Just had a thought, maybe i can prep the shell to be able to prime that over the weekend. Then prime the bootlid as a separate piece which could then be done one evening after work as it's a much smaller area. Of course, if things go well enough, i may be able to prep the bootlid for this weekend.

The other thing that is bugging me is that the rear spoiler sticks out about 1/2 an inch on the pass side. You can see it not line up with the other side spoiler when the lid is closed. Think it will need removing and adjusting, think that the holes were drilled a bit of target when it was installed. Not sure if i can 'live with it' as is, or if it will be one of those 'i bloody wish i would have sorted it when i had the chance'. Then again, it is summer already and it would be nice to start using it

Looks like i'm about to start deblending the 3 piece blended spoiler :(

I like the look of the blended spoiler, but i've seen them crack before and also, moisture can also get into the gap between the underneath of the spoiler and into the blending filler area and cause it to rust out. here we go...

The plan now is to fix the quarter panel end on the drivers side. Looks like it had a bit of something hit corner, so i'll see what i can do with metal working the corner so that it doesn't have to have so much filler on it as before. Then i'll weld up the holes on the quarters and trunk, that were drilled for the cloned spoiler, as they aren't in the standard place. I've luckily got a stock centre spoiler from a Firebird that i will use on there, i've also bought some side spoilers from the states, they should arrive in about a week and a half.

Any tips on how to get the holes drilled in the correct spot? Are there any measurements / template for it? Would hate to do all this work for it to end up misaligned.
Also, any tips on getting the trunk lid to sit well, height wise? I seem to have got it centred, as the gap between the quarter and trunk lid on both sides appears to be correct and consistent. The end (bottom?) of the trunk lid also lines lines up flat against the quarter (hope that makes sense - the bit that rolls down and meets the lights). The part i am struggling with is the height - the passenger side is level with the quarter, but at the end (by the lights) is a touch higher than the quarter (but you can push this down with your finger and it sits correctly). Then, the drivers side is lower (along the whole side of the trunk) than the quarter. Effectively need to raise the drivers side of the trunk lid.

So once the quarter is metal worked and filled, the holes are welded, then trunk lined up height wise, then i will fill any areas that need attention i.e where the roof meets the quarter - i dug the old filler out so need to skim both sides and a touch on the drivers side door too. Then that makes the shell ready, so going over it with 180 (all 120 at the moment) to get rid of the 120grit scratches. Then hopefully the spoiler sides will be here, in which case i can fit those prior to primer paint. If not, i will sand down the parts that have already been primed - had a few pinholes that needed filling, so will sand those areas, but not the whole panel, as i will spot primer when priming the shell. Also just remembered that i need to paint strip a mirror and prep them for paint.

Have tomorrow off, working on Saturday, let's see what we can get done...
