Looking at doing an oil change soon on the 305 tpi. Found Castrol Edge 5W30 Fully Synthetic at a good price. Will this be ok? I remember reading 5w30 on the dipstick but not sure if it should be non / part or fully synthetic? Engine is factory tune and no plans to do much to it.

Don't think you'll go wrong you'll fully synthetic on the 305.

I think non synthetic is recommended for older engines than need thicker organic oil.

You may notice a tendency for your engine to leak past gaskets with a thinner synthetic oil also crank seals...
Also might increase smoke caused by valve seal issues ans also ring sealing on older engines .
Just Sayin'

Yep recently did this. Used Castrol EDGE in my 305 tpi. Works a treat. Just pour in the 5ltrs and wait a while before checking the levels.

Think that's more likely on older engines with bigger tolerances, or higher mile versions... could go up to 10-40 full synthetic (what I use) to stay a bit thicker if concerned.
I think the benefits of a good modern synthetic are well worth it..

Good thoughts here, thank you!

It already kicks a bit of blue smoke on start up, so i think it needs replacement valve seals :( It doesnt smoke when idling / driving, just on initial startup.

You reminded me of some vids i saw a little while ago about synthetic oil, found them and posted below.

I wonder, if fully synthetic is "thinner", then would a 10W 40 fully synthetic be a good compromise?

You are probably right on the 10-40 Stu, better for the older engines and has the advantages of synthetic.
The reason GM specified the thinner grade was more to do with the dreaded CAFE fuel averages that the US Gov.used to punish manufacturers for making vehicles that had any performance or fun potential
Thin oil helps mpg but does little for engine protection under stress...
