3.8 v6 ,I cant get rid of this misfire I have ,thought it was the maf sensor which I had codes up for ,so replaced that and light was reset ,got no codes for that now ,but still have the misfire ,under normal duty car runs fine ,but as soon as you give it some it misses ,anyone had the same thing ,thinking it maybe a lack of fuel ,so will change the filter ,but the one on there don't look old,its starting to get on my nerves now as I waited nearly two weeks for the maf sensor to be delivered from rock auto and it hasn't changed a thing ,gutted

I had this exact same problem when i had my 2000 3.8 v6. It took us over 6 months to find the problem. Turned out it was one of the coil packs. There are three on them and it was the middle one iirc. They are prone to packing up due to the location of them just under the windscreen gully.

Hope that helps and fingers crossed it's the answer you are looking for.

I have a slight misfire it seems, albeit on a 3rd gen TPI engine. Only occasionally when cruising though - i was thinking the same - fuel filter, if not, then possibly spark plugs or HT leads. Coined with a2kmaro's experience, sounds like you're looking at something ignition related then?

OK terryr you will get MAF or MAP sensor codes because because of the misfire it will upset the messages being sent and throw up all sorts of codes.

Can you be more specific about your misfire,

like is it irregular

or is there a pattern to it

or is there a place on the rev counter that it wont pass like say 3000 rpm

and is it the same under load

or the same sat still with your foot on the throttle

I had this on my old IROC, along with erratic occasional tickover, turned out to be worn Throttle Position sensor. I remember being told it was a weak point on TPI engines..

The previous owner did mention something about the throttle position sensor. Will have to look into it, thanks for the the advice  Wonder if Terrryr has had success in diagnosing / repairing his?

First step.
Warm engine at nightime.
With the engine running a gentle mist spray from one of these filled with water and a drop of dish soap. Aim at the wires, coils and plug caps.

If you have a dramatic light show, you have an ignition wire/coil problem, and you just need to follow the light :P .

Don't drown the engine, just a gentle mist. Oh and the drop of dish soap is supposed to make the water slightly more conductive.

That sounds like a good way of diagnosing, plus it'll be a lot of fun to watch
