If you have a 235 60 15 as the factory spec, will it make much difference going for a 225 60 15 (rims would remain the same)? The price of a 235 is £150, the price of a 225 is £75. I will be changing the whole set, so all 4 would be 225's. I know that the speedo will be slightly off by approx 1mph, but wondering if any further thought should go into it?

Looked into the load rating, the 235's are 750kg, the 225's would be 710kg's, so 40 kg per tyre / 160kg overall difference.

Also in regards to the speed rating, the ones on there are 112mph whereas the 225's would be 168mph.

Ok did some thinking in regards to the load. The curb weight is 3530 US pounds. This translates to 1,601.19Kg's. Distribution is 57% front, 43% rear. So the front ones would see 456.33 kg's each, the rear would see 344.25kg each. With the front carrying the most weight so they would be the ones to scrutinise, the original tyres would have a margin of 296kg, the 225's would have a margin of 276kg. I would assume that this margin would still be acceptable with the 225's? I have been dis-generous with the curb weight, as it's estimated at 1,569.5 to 1,601, so i went with the heaviest weight on the calculations.

There will also be a smaller contact patch area of 1 cm per tyre / 4cm overall. As i'm not driving it on the edge, i imagine this will make an unnoticeable difference too?

I wouldn't usually give it this much thought if it was £10 / £20 difference, but a Pirelli tyre is £200, a cheaper one is still £150 for a 235, but the 225 continentals i can get are £80 so it's a huge difference as it's 4 tyres... £800 vs. £320 for a difference of 20kg's and 1cm per tyre. The Continentals have a higher grip, speed (112 vs 168 mph) and efficiency rating too.

Ye i was looking at those sites, also at camskill's. There is a BF Goodrich £161 and Hercules £118 that come in that size, £5 more per tyre for 245 / 60/ 15, but not sure about the performance of those tyres. They seem to be classed as an off road tyre (also a lower speed rating of 112MPH so almost rules out any ideas for a trackday use), and i've heard that they aren't the most confident when it gets a bit wet outside. Just seems to be a massive jump in price from a 225 to a 235. hmm :think:

I found a new pair of Cooper Cobra 245/60/15s on eBay these are VR rated (for Camilla)

Thanks for the advice guys. That tyre calculator is brilliant! So after some investigating, i did something obvious and checked the door sticker, which said 215 / 65 / 15. So it looks like the 235's were an equivalent replacement at some stage. 215's good as it gives me loads of options, new decent tyres are available from £60. Though, they are a bit narrower of course. I need to now figure out if the wheels are original, maybe the 215's will be too narrow! Before i found out about the 215's, i did manage to find a couple of places that had new Grabber HT's for £370 delivered for a set of 4, so not too bad compared to the £600 - 800 for Pirelli's and BF's. Will look into the wheel width and take it from there...

I'd go for the 225's Ray, I run 225-60-15 Avon ZZ3's on mine, Mart runs the same & uses his for wet weather racing :thumbup: . Tim, have you tried the Cooper Cobras yet?? they're not a good tyre at all. A friend of mine just got rid of his on his Chevelle & fitted some smaller width radials & said it's like night & day in the handling stakes, the Cobras were atrocious in the wet too.

No I haven't tried the Coopers yet in extremis!
Seem OK in the dry- mind you we had those awful XP 2000 General grabber tyres on before and since Camilla hasn't an LSD - makes for a lairy ride!

We use 225/60/15 Yoko 00032r at times - these are VG but I thought the aim here was to find a cheap tyre that had the correct speed rating (for insurance)?

Pity Hoosier dont make a road tyre- or do they?

Whatever you do, get a decent modern tyre design and make.

I saw a deal on Falkens in 225/60/15 W rated too at Mytyres for £74 each, or Uniroyals at Camskill for £72.
