On a bit of an impulse and for the hell of it I thumped in the opening bid on an auction on Saturday afternoon. It had 5 mins to go, I had barely had that long to look at the ad, but I thought, what the hell.

What did I buy, 4 x 16" Camaro wheels with tyres. The ad was primarily selling the wheels though as the tyres had about 3-4mm of tread left and the centre caps were a bit manky. However they were both still part of the deal.

How much for this bundle of joy, £125. Sounds too go to be true, 4 usable wheels and tyres for less than the price of a new BFG on my current car. So where's the catch, well there is one, and it wasn't a small one. It was a 270 mile trip one. The wheels were located in South Shields.

Now the original plan after buying them and think 'oh no, what have I done!' Was to drag a buddy along for the road trip next weekend. Except if forgotten that next weekend I'm out both days, so instead I'd have to make the trip the next day (yesterday).

Left at a crisp 6am for the 4 1/2 hour car journey. Paid for the wheels via paypal so no money issues with handing money over. Met up with the guy as he was tinkering with his '91 RS in the front garden. Lovely bloke, had a good chat and completely under sold the wheels.

Each one was immaculate, loads of life left in the tyres (at least 5000miles), refurbed a year or two ago when they were sprayed white. These won't be living on my car or at least I don't think they will. I bought them to use at the strip for something a bit more grippy than my 215 section BF's.





Will see how they improve my cars get up and go, but I thought a very good spur of the moment purchase. It also helps to have a company van with cruise control, making the journey just that little but less tedious.

Looks like a good buy, and proper bargain at £125 (even taking the collection fuel unto account)

Fitted them last night and after a quick test drive I am definitely only viewing them as a wheel purchase. The low profiles and width makes the car tram line so badly. However, when on fresh Tarmac the handling is much better.

They seem smaller than 16 inches, sure they´re not 15 ?

Definitely 16", says on the tyre wall and because these are 16" Z28 wheels.

Having looked up the correct tyres for these wheels there are two options, either 235/55 or optional 245/50.

I prefer a little more sidewall on my tyres.

What happened to your original door mirrors ?

I hear ya, these won't be staying on the car long. I mainly bought them for the wheels and I'm just trying them out for the heck of it. They're really too low profile and tramline far too much. I'll be putting my original wheels back on and probably end up getting some slicks for the rears.

As far as I'm aware these are stock and were put on for the Japanese market where the solid non-fold away aero mirrors would've been out lawed. Its another thing on my list to replace

Are they 245/50/r16?
Been running this size since I've owned my camaro and I would never go smaller, can't see why you get tramlining unless your tracking Is out or the tyres are knackard? (Uneven wear, bulges, flat spots or just plain old)

Either way they look good!

My car had 15" when i got it. Bought some cheap 17" rims with some tyres for a bargain price, put them on but very dissapointed with tramlining etc... Put decent new rubber on, and had the alignment done and no looking back...
I like the look of them in white...

The white appears to be a marmite thing. Some people have liked it while others have said it looks nasty. Personally, I don't mind it.

The tyres are old, that's for sure. Rears have a few cracks in them, haven't yet dated the tyres, but will have a look for the code later.

At the moment though, they're more than likely going to get rolled into the corner of the workshop for now. I didn't intend on spending money of buying new rubber all round for it. That most likely will cure the tramlining issue.

Can someone tell me if it is ok to go with a narrow tyre on the front than on the rear? Not sure if someone was winding me up, but they gave me the impression putting something like 235/50 on the front and then opting for something like 245/55 on the rear would fail an MOT as the tyres aren't matched. Personally I can't believe that true, and would've only thought that would be an issue if they were on the same axle like that.
