I thought the 700R4 was OK if handled gently enough, but will fail if fluids cooked and mistreated. You can get them built up pretty strong by loads of companies now, so personally I'd stick with for less hassle and the overdrive benefits. Also, you could put even higher gears in, 3.73 or something, if you want to leave the line quicker.
I had my old TH350 fail twice, so ended up going manual as that's what I wanted anyway.
I'll stick with it for now, but it's something I'll keep an eye out for. The benefits of the overdrive are pretty good in fairness. Are you running a 10 bolt rear end?

You have too choose the rear gear carefully as the TH700R4 has a very low first.
I was told to go for 4.11 rear gears but the adviser was only thinking of the overdrive ratio.
4.11 would be great but I don't want to completely sacrifice road drivability, thats why I was looking in the mid 3.xx range. I don't currently intend of going stupidly fast at the strip, my main aim is to run Sportsmen ET which doesn't require super fast cars, more consistency. For the last year or so I've been running RWYB and off the line traction even with a 305 is pretty variable, an LSD would help me greatly at getting a clean start.

3rdGenmalc, couldn't help noticing your dyno chart went up to 9000 rpm, have you had much top end work done to your head?

Car Details:1986 Camaro, bought into Spain by me in 1993.
305 replaced by a 355, 750 Demon carb, RPM AirGap intake, Brodix heads, Hedman Hedders, 3" Flowmaster exhaust.
Wheels are Summit aluminium 5 spokes, tyres are 245 rear 225 front BF Goodrich.
B/M transmission, battery relocated to the rear, GoodMark 4" cowl steel hood.
Location:Spain East Coast
The cam I have is for torque and after 4500rpm it´s useless, fine for a street car, I´m no where near 4000 on the motorway at 80mph, 2.73 rear gears.
The rear gear you see above is a 3.42, I hope it will be the best of both worlds, acceleration and cruise.

Actually it´s a cam for a 305 carbed Camaro, computer controlled.
I took a chance on using it in my 355 shortblock and have´nt been disappointed.
My heads are Brodix IK200, no work needed.

Do a search here for max torque th700r4, lots of theories.

I run th350 autos and have not managed to break one yet, a few internal mods have been done though.
You must remember that some TH350 trannys were for low output engines and have less clutches installed, the clutch apply pistons can be machined to accommodate the extra friction but it is a lot of aggro, a hardened sprag is also an option as these are supposedly the first part that breaks when launching hard, an adjustable governor will tailor your shift points to your liking. I have changed my 3.23 gears for 3.42 while building my axle and you can feel the difference, although I would never go numerically higher than this without an overdrive as it is a street car, What times do you get with a 305 motor?

This seems to be the theme I'm getting, that a TH350 is stronger, but I will stick with what I have for now and see if it lasts a season.

Currently, my best ET to date on a poorly prepped track was 16.66, but I'm averaging high 16's low 17's leaving it in D and not manually shifting the box. Like I said though, I'm not solely going for all out performance at the moment. Would rather getting the thing launching consistently and putting down reliable predictable times. My Alston SFCs turned up the other day and I'm waiting to bolt then weld those in.

I love your work Malc, you've got a lot more confidence in doing the rear end than me! I was going to look for one to bolt straight in but I have been looking at getting an Eaton or Auburn Series 3 carrier, but I'm lacking the confidence in being able to fit the whole thing back together and it actually working. What was the motor before you fitted the 355?

This is my first axle rebuild and I´m terrified of my first drive with it, which with no more delays will be the end of next week..

My biggest worry is using a spacer instead of the crush sleeve, they say it´s better in
the long run.........set up correctly of course. :lolno:

My original motor was a computer Q Jet 305, that carb drove me nuts.

Still got the original 10 bolt with GM posi in mine. Had the gears changed from 2.56 to 3.42 but I've got the 5speed with 0.68 overdrive to make it easier to live with..

If you're drag racing then I'm guessing the chances of gearbox breakage will be higher than just bumbling around with the odd squirt  .. Hopefully it'll hold out and you'll be good. !!!!

I'm hoping it will last for now, although would rather like to fit something a bit tastier in there. Still waiting for Rocky to let me know what LSD he has.

Ah ok, very interested to know what you have. 8-)

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for rear suspension setups regarding getting better launches? I've heard about fitting LCA relocation brackets, which should help the rear tyres bite in more.

With a set of decent tyres Camaros lunch pretty awesome!
So make sure you have the tyres for launching/grip.
