Interesting thread.
Interesting for the reason that it compares and equates with other car forums in regards to the current prices of any particular cars.
In my experience a lot of people join forums to get help. Totally understandable and of course natural. Unfortunately a significant percentage of `car enthusiasts` are, lets be charitable, short on funds. A lot of people are on a budget and as such they seek the `cheapest` this or the `best value` that, often criticising the more expensive option as being a waste of money or the latest model or newest version of a car for lacking `soul` or not being aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The point I`m getting to is the value of anything is purely subjective and in the form of a motor car the variables involved far supercede the the flippant opinions and hasty price tags thrown in the direction of a photograph. In other words a one owner concours car is worth way more than a 9 owner high miler daily beater with issues. As a result anyone with something special is justified in asking more for something better. That is where the problem lies. I would say that ISN`T up for dispute but people will dispute anything and not because they are necessarily correct.
The antithesis is most motor traders are by nature liars. Most, but not all. I don`t apologise in the slightest for that disparaging remark as it`s their job to shift stock and their business to sell you a car. They will play on the `clean` low mileage thing like they are doing you a favour but the same man will sell you a duffer next week with some `wear and tear` to be `expected`. Add the need to make a profit into the equation and we`re on rocky ground with prices just being picked out of the air.
As with anything, see the thing first then decide, don`t compare it with the bargain (rusting pile of junk) your mate bought for for £xxxx.
Completely agree with this approach
on another forum which specialises in Jeeps and the like the language and tone of posts are far more aggressive and at times wholly inappropriate
see my post re CJ7 values:
"Genuine low mileage or V8 or fully restored CJ Jeeps do go for a lot of $ in USA
see below for examples
http://www.austinjeeps.com/available.html
So he is probably not wholly out of line with USA values.
I personally do not believe that disparaging remarks about what someone believes their car is worth from a disinterested party are helpful.
Even worse if these quick from a distance judgements are made with a view to pressurising the vendor to do a deal at an advantageous price.
Other websites I am involved in (as sec of Classic Camaro for eg) don't allow such input."
I would also like to add that can you imagine what the honest purchaser feels when having bought his IROC for 10k- he then comes across remarks suggesting he has been legged over- a barn find E Type shouldn't fetch 20k - but they do- and then a restored ex barn find E Type fetches 200k (and is still good value vs Aston Martins)! And where are those who suggested from their flimsy cover of forum anonymity that the 20k barn find was a bad deal- did they make the remarks because they couldn't spare the 20k and were consequently envious of aforesaid punter?? I think we should be able to make informed comments re value and price............
If a potential purchaser wants info then he may always flag the issue up openly.
On the other hand we are quite able to match prices vs the Camaro value index that I produced some time ago ( and which is consequently out of date)- perhaps we should revisit the template?
BTW the Jeep debate became quite interesting :

I ended up quoting the 4X4 article values
