Hello my name is Nick and I will be moving to the UK in either December or January. I am bringing my 68 Camaro with me and have a feeling im gonna need your help with it. My questions arise when i think of getting it road legal. I have read online about turn signals (color), fog lights, 3-pt seat belts... etc. So im just a little lost on what im gonna have to change when i get there. Trying to get all the info i can before i get there so i can get on the road as soon as possible.

Hi Nick and welcome to the club! Whereabouts are you moving to here from?

Nice looking 1st gen you have there :thumbup:

Good that you are looking ahead for these things, not sure how familiar you are so apologies if my answer is a bit simple. The MOT is a test which occurs every year and there are a couple of guys on here who are MOT testers so can be a great help to you. Below are a couple of links of what to look out for. Main things will be as you say indicators - must be amber on a 4 corners, with exemptions on U.S cars before a certain year (i think early 60's?). Rear fog light is i think mandatory for cars after a 1980. Though mine is an '79 and i don't need rear fogs... this is England, it is foggy, so i have one on the rear: ). Front fog lights aren't necessary. A note on the 'optional' stuff is that if it's there, but doesn't need to be, then it must then abide by those rules. i.e if you fit a rear fog to yours, then it must be red, it must have a lighted switch so that you have a visual indicator that it is on. Same for a spare tyre, you don't need one but if you do, then it must be a road legal tyre i.e not bald / flat. The usual bits must be operational - horns, wipers, seat belts must retract etc. There's a note in the below about lights, in that headlights must be aimed at a certain height / direction etc.

Saying all the above, i do often see U.S cars with red indicators on the rear (especially Cougars) and no rear fog lights. That doesn't put you on the good side of the law of course :)

All advice Ray's given above is good stuff.
Re the fog light, you definately won't need one, other stuff like belts etc.. you can probably find out what year they became compulsory. Don't reckon you'll have to do much except the red indicators (turn signals)

Well, me, I'm a tester see, so I know what's needed. No fog light required but if fitted, must be centre rear or offside rear, not nearside and must have telltale inside visible when switched on.
Indicators must be amber front and rear, easy enough to do with a little tweaking.
Seat belts can be lap belts, do not need to retract.
Washers, wipers, horn brake lights etc as normal. Headlamps need to dip to nearside, often missed on imports, good opportunity to fit halogens at the same time to see what you're going to crash into unless you fit European type tyres with our weather.
I'll MOT it for you but I guess you aren't near me so that's not a a flyer. Some MOT testers don't know the rules and some dislike US cars, while others do a 'friendly' (ie bent) MOT which can backfire on you.....HTH

Awsome! thanks for all the info guys. I really do appreciate it.
Sounds like i am gonna have some work to do, not much but turn signals, horn and washers.

As a motorcycle rider I can appreciate the idea of being seen, fog lights are a great idea so I will be looking for those front and rear. And checking out pictures of how they are integrated into a first gen.

I will be stationed at RAF Lakenheath so im sure i will live somewhere in that general area as long as i can find a place with a garage ;)

If you need any assistance advice-admin- info the guys who look after my 2 68s, their own ZL1 FIA racecar, a 70 1/2 Z/28 RS SS racer at least one other FIA Corvette (and others) - they are just down the A11 from Lakenheath

Operation is called Scott racing and they are based near Red Lodge

Butch recently passed an MOT first since 2008 thanks to them just pm me or email etc for further info?
