Hi Guys :wave: if you need to grind or sand Fiberglass make sure you wear overalls and a good respirator as fiberglass can damage your lungs big style. Also if you get it on your skin the best thing is get a cool /cold shower ,as it closes up the pores in you skin and the fibers dont go any deeper into your skin and you dont itch as much as it can be realy bad Cheers Neil :thumbup:

I used to know a guy who made custom made on site ponds from fibreglass and he reckoned its as dangerous as mdf and i have had 3 mates who were chippys die early from cancer due to mdf :thumbdown: :thumbdown:

ps and a signmaker so thats 4 :(

I was allways told cutting concrete , natural stone and bricks were ok and have never worn a mask but they too cause cancerous dust but I am allways outside.....still just cant stand wearing a mask :problem:

This was one of the contributing factors to me selling my business a few years ago. I used to have a bodyshop & also a fibreglass laminating shop making parts for the auto industry. I was sitting outside the workshops on a nice sunny day around midday, when I noticed a lot of fibreglass particles twinkling in the sunlight. It dawned on me that we hadn't trimmed any fibreglass that day & that it must have been because we swept up the workshops first thing in the morning & that the 'glass particles were still airborne. My father hadn't long passed away with cancer & I'd become aware of my mortality. Seeing the fibreglass in the air that day, brought home the realisation that even though masks & extraction were used when trimming the 'glass, I was unknowingly breathing this stuff in everyday :o :thumbdown: .

What you have said Nige is spot on ,i have also see the same (in the sun )some time after sweeping up .Now any cutting drilling grinding of fiberglass ,or anything dodgy for that matter is cut outside and swept then hosed down (also with a mask ) Cheers Neil :thumbup:

Hi Neil,

I guess that your post was spurred by my comment on FlakMonkeys build thread ;) Scary stuff and thank you for the Private Message. I have been entertaining guests from the states so haven't been on the forum recently. Good idea on the cold shower - i was taking warmer showers because i thought that would help open the pores to let any fibres out. Good shout though. Probably didn't help that it was 30 degrees in the garage so i was wearing shorts and often not even a t-shirt :wtf: Believe me, cannot wait to get rid of and out of the dust and glass. I have been pretty good at wearing a mask and got a decent sized extractor fan that clears the air pretty quick, but It's scary knowing that even the next day, with full extraction etc as Nige says, there's still stuff floating about in the air. Thanks for the safety warning, always good to keep H&S at the front of the brain, otherwise you don't get to finish the project / enjoy the end result!
