Lead loading the hood part 2

Applying the body solder, the stick (not visible in this pic, not enough hands to hold it & take photo) is melted & pushed down onto the tinned metal until it starts to flow onto the panel. Put enough on until it's just proud of the surface to be repaired



Smoothing out the solder with the wooden paddle



Finished loading, now ready to file to shape



The repair is then filed to the desired shape, ready for primer.

The engines now being built. Here's some pics of the cleaned & prepped block with one of the 6" Eagle rods & KB pistons ready to have the rings fitted. The rings are Total Seal & will come out at 11.1. The steel crank's also made by Eagle & it has a circle track special grind cam (solid) specifically made for this engines application.

Can you see the join in the big end of the rod???

I'm in the middle of making an airbox on the underside of my hood out of fibreglass for the cross ram intake to seal against, allowing it to draw cold air in through the cowl hood at the base of the screen. As soon as I get my computer back from being repaired I'll post up more pics of how it's going. aaaargh!! I hate computers cheers,...Nige

Thanks for the offer Steven, had I known it was gonna take this long I would've sent to you. Initially it would just shut itself down in the midle of whatever you were doing, but wouldn't turn on unless you turned it off at the mains, waited a while & then restarted it. It'd run fine & then POW!! it'd shut itself off again. I figured it was getting hot, so I took off the side panels & blew out the dust with a low pressure on the airline & freed up one of the fans that was stiff to turn. Put it altogether & then when it started up it'd freeze frame Aaaaargh!! So it should be back at the end of this week hopefully & then I can get around to sorting out/download photos from my camera & post some more stuff up on here & the rest of the forum, cheers........Nige

Well the computer's still dead so no pics yet, but a quick update for those interested. The engine's fully built now & is sitting in the car just waiting for some odds & ends to be fitted. The trans checked out ok, so that's also in the car along with the shifter & the prop's on. Headers are done & have been modified a little to fit (I used 1-3/4" second gen headers in the end which are gonna be aluminium coated)Almost all of the electrics are now wired in with lights guages etc working. All of the brakes have been plumbed in with new stainless braided hoses fitted front & rear. They've also been bled. The front suspension has had the new springs & Koni adjustable shocks fitted so is almost finished as it just needs the hubs drilling out to take the bigger studs & the caster, camber & toe in needs to be set. So, all in all it's coming along really well. As soon as the 'puter's fixed I can post up some more pics.

Interesting thing we discovered with the heads (2.02 fuelies) is that on the front camel hump it has the name "Traco" stamped on it ( the name's inside an oval). If you know your historic Trans Am racing you'll know that Traco built the Trans Am engines for the Penske/Donohue Sunoco Camaros.Could be how come they've been ported & flowed so much if Traco had a hand in it, Cool huh?? Well the engine's now in & pretty much ready to run. It's gonna run a single 4 bbl carb initially to dial everything in & then once I have a base line set, I'll switch to the twin 4 bbl cross ram set up. This way I can make back to back comparisons between the two set ups & see the differences in performance.

I wanted to run 1-3/4" primary pipe headers, but couldn't get any for a sensible price over here & to get them from the States was gonna cost me over £700.00 after duties etc. So, I bought a pair of 2nd gen headers over here from real Steel as they had them on the shelf. The passenger side one fitted fine, but the drivers side fouled on the steering/steering box. The front pipe was cut off as was the collector & was "adjusted" for clearance. . I took them to Avanti Engineering in Tipton near Birmingham for them to be blasted & hot ali sprayed. They're now white & look great & with the ali coating should last a good while. All for the princely sum of £30.00. I'll post up the pics of them next time I get the camera out. cheers...Nige
