Ok ill hold my hand up.

I have no idea what these gearing numbers mean. Anyone care to elaborate? Are the numbers best going down for accel and up for top speed/mpg?

I had a shorter final drive fitted to my old accord type r and it made for tighter acceleration but a higher revving cruise, this is the only reference point I have!

Does a gear change involve a whole new rear axle? What sort of cash are we looking at?

Shall I get my coat?

:)

ferdi, I set my own up but had to buy all tools etc and it's not an easy job, I took my time as I had a spare axle so I could work on the other out of the car. I had a used gear set too that was a bugger to setup, runs fine and wear pattern good (checks how gears mesh) and lash fine, but do have a bit of noise. (the guy who had used them before said they were correctly setup an whined too??)

Yeah i'd give the pro's a call down south, see what they can do. I dont know how mustang ones are done, but 10 bolt are a beggar to do as the shims are behind the bearing, so if its wrong then you have to re-remove the bearing...which can bugger up and etc etc...

The stock auto gears should be 2.73 (check your door jam codes, it should say GU2). The performance Gm option is 3.23. I stepped up to a 3.42 to be best for drag 1/4 mile and street. Yanks like to go 3.73. Check how much it would gear car down with a simple divide of ratios. A 3.73 would be over 25% reduction in top speed. Or to look another way revs would be more than 25% more at a given speed. Gears are not cheap, then a day of labour? and also a bearing set. At least £500-600 I would guess....

On the plate, I had mine there for a while, didnt like it. Now its a small plate at the side.

(Brian, I'll get some more 'pics' of my beast up soon...busy at mo haha...and it needs a good clean !!!)

Yes, you're right Ferdi, as the gearing changes the acceleration gets better but you'll lose top speed.

The numbers relate to the ration of the actual propshaft speed to the speed the wheels turn at, so 2.73 means the wheels are turning 2.73 times for every single turn of the propshaft...

Changing gears to a higher ration will sharpen up acceleration, but as you know from your Accord final drive change it means your then revving higher at the same speed, using more fuel, noise etc.. so it's a compromise depending on the use of the car, and what you can live with.

I recently changed mine from the very low 2.56 gears it had, and it really has livened up the car. It's pulls away much better, and goes through the gears quickly... but it's revving higher at motorway speeds, so I chose 3.42 as I could live with this. Mine were done by Paul at Southern Axles in Watford, if that's nearer you, drive in drive out cost was about £500 all in including the news gears. As Maudy says it's not a job you'd want to attempt yourself due to all the exact tolerances during reassembly involved.

Nice explanations guys, thanks. I shall call both firms and get an idea of costs.

Longest journey I do in the chev is to Billing, so Id suffer the worse mpg. Like the idea of a faster pull away! Is there any other detriment, does it put a greater strain on the tranny or prop?

Questions, questions :)

Generally you`ll hear the biggest downfall is higher revving and slightly more fuel. In reality if you drive around in town it won`t use much more fuel as it`s getting into a higher gear sooner and quicker. You`ll use the loud pedal more though and really that`s why you`ll burn more. Like I said earlier the car will feel like its lighter. It shouldn`t have any detrimental effect on anything else except the slightly extra load from you using the shoe now an then BUT I`m not sure on the 10 bolt rear end `issues` and high gears so Luke or Chevy Stu will be more clued up here. I don`t know about the auto box on 4th gens but on the Mustang with 4.10s in town I could drive around in OD where as before it was continually shifting between 3rd and OD which I suppose isn`t handy so in that respect the gears helped. Not sure on your set up though. If I had had manual I wouldn`t have went down the gears route.
On the motorway your top gear won`t feel as lazy (depending on the ratio) and might be slightly annoying and that will use a bit more gas but it`s not a huge amount. If the car`s not a daily driver then it won`t matter. That`s the only thing that bugged me. Being on the main road and not being able to rumble along at 60 or 70 with the engine ticking over.

You`ll hear stuff like "Don`t fear the gear" but they don`t add anything to the car power wise although they do feel like they get it moving better but the performance difference isn`t a magic jump if the truth be told. Going too steep will result in a useless first gear.
I`ve read allsorts of bo[[ocks on forums about 4.56s on street tyres with a blower and having no problems hooking up.Image. I had thought about a supercharger but after the gear install I realised there was no way I could add any more serious power unless I went back to 3.27s or similar to get traction. If you`re spinning you`re not winning. Fun though. What I`m saying is if you have any plans for forced induction in the future I`d think long and hard about changing the diff ratio and if you do don`t go overboard.

Like Chevy Stu says, choose wisely and you`ll gain something in the Butt dyno department and for a few hundred quid its not bad. It`ll put a smile on your face if nothing else for a wee while.
On another note. Losing top speed is a hotly debated subject as re gearing your car will actually HELP it get up to speed better. Speaking from experience I lost NO top end speed in my car when it was re geared . I ran out of balls before it ran out of speed. Most cars havent got the power to redline the car in top gear anyway so actual top speed is theoretical in most cases and without huge power its unattainable.
On another note. I actually went down the taller tyre route to lower my gearing a tiny bit.

Here. Have a faff about with this (left hand side).

Brian is right, you dont loose real top speed, only theoretical top speed. The stock auto is geared to something stupid like 260 mph if you hit 6200 rpm in 4th gear. In the ECU however you are currently NOT allow to go into 4th at full throttle, so will max out at the top end of 3rd around 160-170 mph. If you gear down to 3.73 that is about the >25% as I said, then 4th will max out, theoretically at 190 mph ish - ie you WONT get there. Thing is you will top out in 3rd at 120 mph and go into 4th which inless you have more than stock power will not pull very much.

In summary :D - Car will be FASTER to roughly 120 mph (top of 3rd gear) but SLOWER past this (assuming 3.73 as your new ratio) - you cant go this fast anyway on the roads!!

The gear conversion with your stock diff will require a THICK ring gear as the differential carrier is different, this means (apparently) the bolts take more strain than using the correct diff carrier and the thinner ring gear (I swapped the diff to the corect unit as I managed to get a 2nd hand axle for £400 with 3.23 that I ran for a year)

Down side also is the pinion has more chance of breaking as is lower gears it tries to climb the ring faster and and be prone to breaking teeth off - aftermarket gears are stonger - and you MUST brake/wear them in corretly too. Autos do not put as much strain on the axle as manuals anyway as you cant clutch drop and so the box and convertor take up some of the strain.

Finally you need a tune to change the gear ratio - I have the correct software to do this (EFIlive) as do some others who might be more local to you. Hand held tuners can do this too but they aren't as good for propper tuning for engine mods. With a tune you can also opt to change where the autobox changes gear to optimize ecomony, ie putting in 4th at 30 mph for example or locking up the stall convertor.....lots of options :D

PS dont worry about fuel, its a V* and sounds good - who cares hahahah :D :D :D

Looks too clean!

Did you get an Airbag DTC code or light on the dash with that steering wheel?

ah rich how are you. I did indeed get a airbag code and efilive wont make it go away so I pulled the bulb and soldered over it :O

Sorry for late reply.

I do have an airbag light indeed, but I have put some stealthy tape over it! Apparently there is a way you can fool the system into thinking the airbag is still there, so the bulb comes on and goes off, with a resistor in series. Never seen any write up guide though so took the easy route!
