I stated previously that the last owner didn`t really keep the car in top condition.

The air filter was beyond cleaning so it was junked. I bought a replacement OEM one. I took off the MAF sensor and bought some of this

Image

The small platinum wires looked black and the thicker wires looked like they had $hit all over them. I sprayed them to bits and used a q tip to gently clean the wires. I cleaned also the butterfly valve on the throttle body and the opening bit was black dirty so that was cleaned till shiny. Car had been struggling with the grime for a while I`m guessing as the MAF screen has bee removed and the filter was thick with dirty oil. The small MAF wires now look skinny and clean and I all put it all back together.

WHAT A F**KIN DIFFERENCE!

Car pulls noticeably better. It idles perfect now as before the rev needle used to slightly vibrate. Really chuffed with something as simple as cleaning and a new filter. It`ll be getting the full service in a couple of weeks including fuel filter (which will not have been changed in 14 years) and diff oil.

Love it. Top machine.

While I,m on the subject of LS1s. I,ve discovered my 98 camaro is actually a 1999 model. Checkin through the original import paperwork it states the build date and year of manuafacture and doing some checking of differences of 98-02 models its definitely a 1999
. Here,s the thing. The V5 states its a 1998 but model year 2000. How do I go about rectifying this? Is it a pain in the hoop or has anyone done it? I spoke briefly to a woman in the local Dvla office when she was transferring my plate and she said I,d need a bit of luck as these things are difficult to alter. Hardly inspiring but honest.
Anyone any experience of this?

Brian

ah glad its all running nice mate :)

as with the dvla thing, it might be due to import time in 2000 so registered then but they put the car on a 98 model. Which is when it could have been built, but to 99 spec as it would have been registered as a 99 car. tbh i'd just leave it unless it really bugs the hell out of you. I know when mine was registered it was down as a v6 first as garage had made a mistake, but it was an import from new and they sorted it out straight away i think. (i didnt have it then but have all paperworks)

Yes. Seems like it could be a pain in the arse. Seeing as its a 1999 I might buy a superchips ot diablosport tuner. I know they don,t get a great review compared to custom tunes but custom tunes aren't a reality here.

I might give it a go. I know from experience that they do a decent job providing you don't fokk about with stuff you're not sure of.

aahhhh NO NO NO...

Sorry for the abruptness, but in my opinion do not waste your money. You will not get anything from a hand held in reality, for a auto they are a bit useful but for a manual you get nothing much.

Read up about this:
http://www.efilive.com/

I have all the software (as we talk about a bit on the phone) and all the WB sensors etc required. I've spent a bit on it but needed it all so I could tune my heads and cam combo. Also for the auto it allows full customised shifting patterns to suit have you drive and stop shift taking an eternity.

For a stock 98 Or 99 model, a tune itself wouldn't get more than maybe 10-15 hp, handheld or custom really - driavbility maybe a bit better...but not enough to notice?
98/99 models already have aggressive timing, the 2000+ models dont so might gain a little more from a custom tune. Fueling can be optimised more than timing which will help the power but only a bit. You can tune for mods, so air filter and exhaust and headers and a tune would net some good gains. Mine put down 330 bhp at the wheels with full exhasut, headers, decat and true duals and a CAI intake setup and my tune.

Also what I've resently learnt about some handheld is that they do not change the ECU learning parameters, so you change the tune to make if faster, but the learning ECU just learns back a 'standardish' tune reading from sensors, so the car cahnges again. I have a pal who needs to reflash his mustang (05) every 2-3 runs at the drag strip becuase it learns itself slower

the tuner that picked up the most MPH at the strip shouldn't win either. If you spin up at the strip you run slower times and actaully run a high MPH (more time to accelerate = higher mph at end) I have experienced this at the strip. The variations of about 1-2 mph I would put down to how well it is driven on day. I'm not a drag racing expert but from experience with my car I can run upto 4 mph different depending on a good or bad lanuch or spinning on gear change....

Ok Luke. Tuner is on hold .

I really was looking at it as a fancy code reader to be honest with the chance of a few ponies.

Interesting reading above by the way.

some of the handhelds have decent code reading abiities but in my opinion they are not worth it compared to a proper package. V1 of EFI live will do the code reading and live data logging so you can see how your car and all the sensors work and read and clear all codes. Obviously you cant tune though....

Don't let me stop you getting something if you really want it, just trying to advise you best I can. Spent a lot of time looking into everything as I know i would be doing heads and cam and the handhelds would not cut it. For 10 hp I would think the money better spent elsewhere.
