Work has continued on cutting out the rusty and bent bits of the Camaro.....
The new complete trunk floor arrived before xmas and this has enabled me to see exactly what needs cutting out and where the joins will be, etc. The new trunk floor is a major piece of fabrication (with staggered shock mounts) and arrived well packed in an enormous box from NPD. I'd also ordered new front and rear windscreens which were not packed very well but thankfully they arrived in one piece. Also arriving were a few other sundry pieces like the boot drop off panels so I think I've pretty much got everything now to rebuild the whole rear end with new panels.

So the next panel to go was the roof which was roughly chiselled off in minutes leaving the old welded edges to be carefully removed and tidied up later on

Both corners at the front pillars are also quite bad and will need some minor patch welds to fix them up

Trail fitting of the inner and outer wheel tubs on the nearside arch (together with the rear quarter panel clamped on) and everything lined up surprisingly well.
This is the view from inside the trunk area

Here's the external view with the rear quarter panel clamped in place. Its amazing how quickly just one panel suddenly brings the car back into shape

Although the rear inner deck panel was rusty it only needed the small repair panel to eliminate all the rusty pin holes that form along this edge. However, the parcel shelf deck had been badly hacked about to get the roll bar tubes through it so I've decided that I'm not happy with this patched panel and will replace it with a complete new panel and remove the rear roll bars. So this is where we started.........

Most of the panel has been cutaway now..............just leaving the front edge attached to the seat bracing which gives much better access for cutting out the roll cage tubes and the remainded of the trunk panel....

So the roll bar tubes have now been cut away and a bit more of the trunk floor has been removed, but there is still a lot more to be cut out to get the new trunk floor to fit.....

And most of the parcel shelf has now gone just leaving the two seat back braces which will be carefully removed and kept for welding back in as and when the new trunk floor panel has been fitted

So here is a long shot of the rear of the Camaro as she stands today... looking very 'naked' with a major percentage of her metalwork missing.... However its all necessary in order to do the job properly. Lots more of the trunk floor to be cut out between the wheel tubs but it won't be long before the new metalwork starts going back in.....

Hio Raven I just love seeing stuff like this & following the progress. It almost makes me want to start another project that I've been thinking about for a while. Anyone know for an early 2nd gen in need of a resto going cheap??

A few years ago I would not have known how to go about a job like this as I am no bodywork 'specialist' or qualified tradesman by a long chalk!! Its only through seeing how others do it on threads like this that it gives you the confidence to give it a go, hence picking up the air chisel...what wonderful and dangerous tool that is!

New parcel shelf / inner deck panel and new seat braces are now on their way over from NPD. In the meantime I shall be continuing with stripping out the old trunk floor this weekend again and will hopefully be ready to install the new floor assembly the week after.

New floor pans have also arrived for both sides but I think I shall finish the rear end first before cutting out the floors :crazy:

Well its been a month since the last report and progress on the Camaro has been really good... Here is the next sequence of photos;
After looking at the shoddy parcel shelf that was badly cut about for the roll cage to pass through I has ordered a new shelf and seat back braces so the old ones were cut out and work continued on cutting back the trunk floor to its natural joint with the floor tub. So;

Braces removed and more trunk floor gone...

Between the shock mounts there is a double skinned box section that provides the necessary strength and bracing for the shock absorber loads. In this picture, from inside the car looking back to the boot, the top skin has been removed leaving the lower skin of the box brace and you can see the nearside rear shock mount in the upper right of the photo

By carefully peeling back the various layers of metal, so as not to damage the chassis legs, this exposed the very substantial nearside shock absorber mounting plate which also had to be removed by carefully drilling through all the spot welds

The offside plate is nearer to the body tub and is therefore smaller in size but still needed careful removal

So with both shock mounting plates removed and the 'box' cross member removed you can now see the two chassis legs extending from the rear of the floor pan and the natural joint where the new trunk floor section will join

It was obvious very early on that this Camaro had taken quite a rear end shunt as both chassis rails were badly creased at the first bend and there is a huge crease in the transmission tunnel where the console finishes. Some time was spent straightening out and strengthening the chassis rails along with removing all remaining spot welds and various minor metalwork repairs and tidying all the edges with a hammer & dolly to receive the new panels. After this both wheel tubs were loosely clamped in place

Followed by laying in the new complete trunk floor assembly and the nearside rear quarter panel

Together with the offside rear quarter panel and the rear tailight panel

And then finally the new parcel shelf with the outer deck panel and the old boot lid laid in for good measure. Amazing how quickly the Camaro took its shape again.

At this stage all the panels (eleven new ones in total so far, plus the roof to be laid on) have only been loosely fitted in place with clamps, mole grips, self tapping screws and a couple of strategically placed bolts . I was amazed at how good they all lined up and fitted so well with no metal bashing at all and even the door gaps are near perfect. I will be inserting a few more self tappers and bolts to pull it a bit more into shape. As the next step is to remove all the panels and prepare them for welding, these screws and bolts will act as reference points to ensure it will all go back exactly in the right place as they get progressively fixed back onto the car and welded in sequence. Considering the accident damage to the chassis rails I was expecting a bit of a nightmare getting it all to square up again but its all gone very smoothly. Next weekend we will lay the roof panel in place to check alignment with the rear quarter panel roof join and see what that looks like - I'm still expecting a major snag somewhere.............

As you say it looks a very similar build with very similar issues..... very interesting to see how the construction of the shell changes year to year under the outer skin? Don't think I would go as far as cutting the entire roof of though !!
I haven't got round to the front end on mine but I know its not dissimilar from Cowmans by the odd poke that I have given mine with a screwdriver when passing !
Cowman - guess you must have nearly finished yours now after 2 yrs?

I remember looking at that shape Camaro in a lock-up in Newcastle a few years back but the guy wouldn't sell it - I still wonder if its there waiting to be done.....

Yeah, the roof swap was a bit of a mission, wan't too bad once I got stuck in! He who dares...!

I've finished all the fab work on mine, just bodywork prep for paint this summer. Hope to be done this year, slowly getting all the photos on here for others to use.

Your project looks to be fairly substantial too, keep at it, it's amazing how these things can turn around, anything can be repaired with time and patience!

Watching yours with interest.

Well a month has gone by and there's not much to show in the way of pictures. All of the panels have now been removed from the car but were first all drilled and bolted together so as they can be re-assembled in the right place when they go back on in the future. Main problem has been metal bashing the inner wheel tub on the drivers side to make it fit within the quarter panel much better and align with the trunk floor drop down panels. Passenger side fit was quite straightforward. All this work takes a lot of time to fit the panels on the car, check all the gaps /alignment, remove them, hammer them, re-fit them all including the quarter panel, measure again and remove them and go round and round this circle until everything fits nice and tight and straight...

This is the start of the process with the nearside rear trunk drop down panel alignment to the wheel tub

Inner wheel tub been drilled for all the plug welding to the chassis at some future point

Here is the evidence of a heavy rear end shunt at some point in its past as the transmission tunnel has a distinct crease in it......
This will be pulled out when the floor pans are replaced

Offside rear quarter has been de-rusted and treated with Kurust and now sprayed in zinc primer ready for a top coat even thought it wont be seen !

Finally we got the new roof panel out of the large box and the packaging of the piece to prevent damage was excellent

And that was laid on the car to check fit and alignment and again it was spot on straight out the box which was really pleasing....
Makes a huge difference to your moral to see the car back together again, even though you know there's a long way to go yet before it can all be welded up in once piece again......


So there we are for the month. Every panel fitted and broadly it all fits OK but loads of work now under the skin to get the wheel tubs and all panels better aligned, lots of preparation for de-rusting and painting that wont be seen and lots of minor repairs and straightening of the existing floors, lots of minor holes in the inner roof structure to be patched up, etc before any of the new panels can be re-fitted and welded up, but pretty pleased with progress at the moment. Bear in mind that I have a day-job and I only work on the Camaro one day a week so progress is a little slow !
