Car Details:79' camaro road & track day toy. 383 stroker, 5 speed TKO trans, lots of suspension stuff, 13" Vette brakes, 18" wheels.
Location:Luton
Had my second trip to Snetterton and the reworked 300 circuit last saturday.

It was a cold start, by the track was dry and had a great morning and clocked up around 30 or more laps before lunch.. it then rained a little and stayed damp for a while, so spent the afternoon going out less and tiptoeing round a few laps more, before calling it a day....

Some great cars there, usual BMW's, Lotus, Caterfields, 205's, also a track prepp'd Austin A35, MGC, V8 Morgan, Porsche GT2, some cool Radical & Ginetta racers...

Looks like a blast!!! I didn't know Snetterton is still open at this time of year? I would have love to run my camaro.

Hope the Elise did not outbrake you round Corum? Haven't been on the new circuit yet- have they left the lovely Bombhole as before- one of the nicest corners anywhere?

Yep, The Bombhole is still there, and I can keep quite good speed round Corum bend, as it's a nice long sweeper, however braking whilst still turning at the end is a bit interesting... I think the main changes are the whole new infield section .

I think most tracks are open all year now, only close for snow or hurricanes nowadays.... Guess they want the money...

I'll be booking up more for next year soon, so will post up and if anyone fancies joining me feel free, it's brilliant fun... !!!

Long sweeping corner - that always makes me think of silverstone, do you need to run a dry sump to keep the engine happy for this track? I bet it's a lot of fun trying to brake and corner :twisted:

I would be interested (if my car ever get's done) so info is welcome :) I have some basic / stupid questions as i'm very unfamiliar with racing / track days like these. I guess i'll ask them openly for the benefit of others in my position. Will i need a roll cage / special seatbelts (harness) with expiry dates, racing gear / helmet / racing license etc to get involved? as a sidenote i'm not that interested in competitve racing as yet, personal time trials, enjoyable the car are good enough now, i don't fancy much competetive bumper to bumper corners just yet :)

That long sweeping corner can cause problems- same as Gerrards at Mallory- all the oil moves up to the top of the lh cylindar rocker cover- and if you don't have good breathers it pours out all over your headers!!

Answer is a really good Moroso trapdoor wet sump- or even a dry sump.

For track days only stipulation for road days is that car has current MOT/tax etc. You will need an up to date helmet (why wouldn't you get the best you can afford here?).

Many like the Hillclimb format- similar to the Isle of Man- where you need reg suit and helmet,gloves and boots, and a non race Nat B licence (no signatures) but car can be road reg and legal- ie no roll cages etc details of driver requirements are at K9-K11 of RAC MSA blue book
nb race suits may be of the older type at present= FIA 1986 standard (I now have two spare in this designation!!) since racers now have to have FIA 8856-2000

All good info from the rather more experienced racer Topcat :D

As said only things you'd need are an MOT and a helmet... However...

With an Auto box you may have to keep an eye on the ATF fluid levels/temps.
Chevy engines, as Topcat says, are prone to oil starvation on long bends, so a trap door sump or dry sump is ideal (I have the Canton Road/Race one)... I think the older Z28 ones can cope to as they're well baffled, but not 100% sure.. I think an Accusump would work well, but never tried one... Other than that, make sure the basic suspension, brake and steering components are good and that's it !!! .

Track day etiquette is usually 'no racing, no timing' so whilst people do drive fast, you don't have to drive like you're racing, and everyone is at a different level, so you shouldn't have anyone cutting in on you approaching a corner. Just keep your eyes on the mirrors, let the quicker cars past. You can book novice track days and taster sessions to to try it out.

Thanks both for the good advice. Ok i was expecting for there to be quite a few standardisations / requiremnents but i guess that's only when you get into the competetive side. This sounds promising so i'll look into some novice / test days and take it easy. I installed a tranny cooler already, so now thinking about plumbing in a temp gauge for it. I guess it makes sense to have one on the line going out of the tranny as opposed to the return line. As far i'm aware the tranny box doesn't have anywhere to plumb in a temp gague (of course i could be wrong :) ).

Hopefully see you lapping me at one of the days next year Stu :P
