Here's some pics of a guitar I've just finished painting for a mate of mine. He just said he wanted a Celtic theme to it, but left it to me to decide colour & artwork. It was quite badly damaged, so needed a bit of repair work before I could get onto painting it. I used candy apple colours over a silver base.

Here's the guitar as I received it. It was obvious it had been repaired in the past, but I didn't know how much had been repaired until I removed the paint

Image

It became obvious that it had been very badly damaged at some point.

The whole of the guitar had to be repaired. Here it is after the primer had been flatted down, ready to be reprimed

Image

The back was first sprayed black, then followed by the artwork of a Celtic cross with a sunburst in yellow candy,

A close up of the finished artwork.

The front was then sprayed with a silver base followed by 6 coats of orange candy. In between coats of candy I added the phrase "everything at eleven". This is in reference to Spinal Tap, who when questioned as to why their amps had eleven on them they replied "You see, most blokes will be playing at 10. You’re on 10, all the way up, all the way up...Where can you go from there? Nowhere. What we do, is if we need that extra push over the cliff...Eleven. One louder." This guy likes to play LOUD!!!!

I then put some artwork in a lighter candy in front of the pick ups

Image

Some Celtic knots were then added

Image

Then another Celtic cross was added to the front. Each of the sections of "weave" have drop shadows airbrushed on. this took absolutely ages to do. Excuse the flash reflecting in the pic, but I found it really hard to photograph. The colour in the next pic is how it is in ordinary light, but the one below it looks more yellowy in colour. This is how the candy makes it look in sunlight, this thing really does change colour a lot depending on changing light.

Image

Some very lightly airbrushed knots were then added to the background

Image

A knot design was then used as a border to join up the whole thing. If you look closely in the pics you can also see a very faint pinstripe running around the edge of the guitar. Notice how the colour changes in the light in this pic

Image

I've just finished cutting it back, now I just hope the guy likes it   he hasn't a clue what it's going to be like, he didn't even specify a colour

cheers....Nige

Very nice work, certainly changed something rather plain looking into a very impressive looking instrument.
That intricate line pattern must take some time to mask and spray !

Yes it does look different in real life, the colour is much more of an orange, but turns to the colour you see in the pics in sunlight or with a flash. My pictures don't capture the details unfortunately. I'm gonna try with the wifes super dooper SLR camera next week once it's all finally cut back to see if it'll pick up the details more.

Re the site format, I've contacted the webmaster (starskyknight) & Tim (Topcat) to advise them that there's a problem with it. Just waiting for a reply.

Cheers...Nige

I'm loving that Celtic Cross thing! It would cost me too much to send it/return it. Its a cheap cello, the shipping would be costlier than the cello! :)
