just to let you guys know that we will be at Donington 15-16 Sept

racing in Butch- the famous Camaro

Thing is the classic grids are thin as:
a everyone is at Goodwood- I have 2 chums racing
b the rest are saving their cars for Spa next weekend

Various commitments have meant not much racing in UK for us this year and in order to do Spa next year we have to run out twice

So as a consequence of the above we have been pitched in with "Deutcsh Marque" racing a whole lot of E36 M3s and Porsche 944s!

Warm welcome to anyone coming to watch= we will be bringing the classic GMC camper- I am on ferry with it as I write.
there is a bbq Saturday night at paddock- see you then then!

there are 4 FIA mustangs in my class

In the "HM" - highly modified class we have
Jackie Cockrane from NI has a seriously specced Tiger- he used to win the Manx Classic
"Smart" Alec Hammond has his super modded Camaro- he of Oxford Products fame (owns it)
Terry Gisborne in a modded Pantera
Simon James has a lovely Tiger
a couple of TRV8s and 2 MGBV8s
(one of which is really quick)
Bob Searles in an Aston V8- co driven by Tony Jardine at Brands- guess he is at Goodwood!
And we are up against a stack of E36 M3s and 944s
my money is on the MGBV8- or the Pantera

we will aim to beat the Mustangs......................

Shouldn't be too difficult, should it? I don't think any of the Mustangs entered are a match for Butch. Unless the 'great leveller' (rain) has a hand in the proceedings.......

Saw some pics from my friend Phil James (racing in the white MG V8) and it looks like there were a few contact moments over the day...

your chum in white MGB V8 had a moment with the Sunbean Tiger of Simon James

and an over enthusiastic Elan bashed into the side of Butch into first corner- (I was dozing at the standing start)

funnily enough the Deutsche Mark guys were pretty good- I got the Clerk of the course to remind them that we have a big blind spot rear rhs and cannot see them- we have no brakes and out accelerate all on the straights etc etc.

my brakes were misbehaving- huge wobble- one disc was warped and spares were no good- so lived with it
got a drive thru penalty for speeding in the pitlane (40 kph) on the driver changeover which wrecked my chances in second race
honestly we have no speed limits on IOM and I have no speedo!
great fun
but I can see why I would rather race overseas in big ticket events than club racing in UK- which is in trouble............ IMO
the issues:
very expensive per track minute for competitors
organisers make no effort whatsoever to publicise events
venue owners keen to maximise entries' value- demand up front fees for booking and are quite content to let the venue to any paying customer- track days being the favourite since they require much less in ambulances/ set up/marshalling etc
competitors are expected to pay for everything since there are no paying spectators
no tv crews
a lot of fairly inexperienced and lairy driving leading to poor driving standards in some races
huge issues over noise limits- we had a strict 108 db limit- the Lambo road car which I think your chum has would not pass, no running of engines before 9.00 and yet first practice at 9.10 (cold engine on WOT = trouble) and yet we have aeroplanes in and out of East Midland Airport all the time........
some rude (by no means all) race staff/pit and paddock marshals
the cscc guys were brilliant - but they really are up against it with all of the above
eu rules- all of these track tyres Toyo R888 are their ilk are to become non street legal from 2014 due to some eu edict over NOISE!
all in all it is no wonder that we don't do many of these UK club racing days these days!
the GMC camper was a great success- first time used for racing- lots of nicknames-"Julian" because you can't get a camper van
we prefer "Hutch" or "Chuck"....................

Does the above mean that you won't be racing in this series again over here? i was hoping to get to this meet & catch up with you for a chat, but unfortunately other things had to take precedence this time, but hoping to get to Castle Combe in October.

no that's my lot as far as UK racing is concerned this season- budget all gone- particularly now I have bought 4 new brake discs and 4 new tyres R888s all ready for South Africa.

We have a door to repair as well -thanks to that over enthusiastic Elan!

my Yokos are 10 years old and my Hoosiers 4 years old!! I see that the front brake discs were late 2010. Time to change the lot!

I have to agree with much of what Tim has identified as problems with racing in the UK. I feel driving standards are much better in HSCC which is partly why I do not race with CSCC or other clubs. Who knows what the future holds though.
