Nor me till i phoned to get some normal brgs
One last thing to try is use the weight of the car to push the drive shaft in.
Jack one side up as high as poss then see if the c-clip will drop out if not i think its mini grinder time !!!

Hi all,

My apologies for not replying sooner ive been away a few days,

Very interesting post about the last chance bearings which i had not heard of either, the mechanic said the shafts would not go in far enough to remove the clips, but if they were tight in there that might be the same situation ill call him tomorrow and see.

What were the worn bearings sounding like?

I was getting an Mot at the same time and the bearings felt fine it was just a precautionary change(not wanting to wreck the shafts)
but it does make me wonder how to proceed as i use the car daily and i dont know what clips are in there now. Hmm.

Thanks a lot folks, Ben.

mine always gets the rear bearing as advosory, unless you've donw a light year of miles OR ran out of diff oil they wil be ok. I've seen shafts out of an 80K car and these dont have any depression where the bearing ran, just slight visual wear. Mines only done 50K and the shafts look fine.

I think your car might have had a problem before and so the wheel bearings were changed to combat that....but obviously the noise still remains....and maybe the diff bearings or loose pinion. Mine was really really loose on my car when I swapped the axle....

I'm really sure if the full brake assembly is removed the half shafts should push in, if the c clips got in there in the first place !!!

Where about are you based....???

Ive done about 20k since i bought it, and i agree the bearings were probably done because of a problem rather than maintenance as the guy was more of a polisher. Though i thought maybe it was because of the diff whine.

I remember it made some clicking noises on bends sometimes when i first got it, and once there was a screeching noise, but they stopped so i forgot about them till now, but maybe its all related.

The garage problem was definately about getting the clips off so they must be tight on there for some reason.

Checked diff oil when i got it so its been ok since i had it,

Im near Tamworth in the Midlands.

Im also not too far from the guy i bought it from so i mght pay a visit if i get time,

Many thanks, ben.

I agree, the bearing were prob done as they were thought to be the issue...when actually it was diff whine?

It is VERY strange why the clips wont come out...

Ah just wondering, youre 2 hours from me i'm near Leeds. I would have gladly taken a look at the car...or we could arrange something? i'll send you a PM :)

Hi all,

It has been a while for a couple of reasons, initially i just carried on driving it as its my daily. Did another 1k or so with no change,

Then the weather startd to cool and the noise receded some.

Then the back box fell off due to a rotted exhaust and i couldnt hear the diff at all. at least while accelerating

Since then ive not used it much as ive had other transport and cant decide what pipe to get.

On the occasions ive been out the diff whine is minimal in the cold weather, thicker oil i suppose So i guess the wheel brgs are fine but ill still get em checked out soon.

Thats about it for now,

Merry Christmas all, Ben.
