Does anyone know the acceptable endfloat for a 10bolt 8.5in Posi axle ?

If I grab hold of the hub end of a shaft and pull/push it I get quite a lot of movement, the inner movement is stopped by the crosspin for the spidergears and the outer movement is stopped by the "C" clip.

I measured the "C" lip in its groove and found .025in slop between the groove and "C" clip. Are the "C" clips supposed to be tight fitting ?

Ooh, I just responded to another post elsewhere here about this. You can shim the play out, basically by placing spacers/shims between the C clip and the side gears so the crosspin just slips between the ends of the shafts. I don't care what is 'allowable', I don't allow play and I guess you don't. Most of them are like this by the way :(
Cheers, Martin

Thanks for confirming what I thought, I am not a fan of play or slack so I will be sorting it out. Besides, it's embarrasing taking a very clean shiny car with a lovely painted underside to the MOT station and it fails on "excess play" in something.

Good man! I'm sure with a little effort you will manage to sort it out. Good luck.
Cheers, Martin

Anything up to about 1/8" is normal and not a problem. You can't shim it all out, might be able to get it down to around 1/16" if you are lucky though.

I've not had a problem shimming all the play out, why do you say it's not possible? Can you explain?
Cheers, Martin

You need some to get the clip in past the recess in the gear. Unless you shim it up so much that it's tight against the cross shaft of course, which I am not sure is a great idea long term....

Ah, that explains it I suppose. I have just spaced the clip until the halfshaft contacted the cross shaft, no problems and no play either. But I never had to space it so much that the clip was out of the recess. If the clip can be spaced out of it's recess, then it can also move out by itself during cornering............... :o
