how hard are the rear axle bearings to do on a 1991 camaro 5.0 is there any guides available

just been out and checked the car i cant hear any noise unless im cornering at 40mph plus but there is movement in the axle shafts in and out if i pull the wheel and push it back in towards the car

I havent had to do this job (yet) so not sure whats involved.
Haynes do a pretty good workshop manual which should help and you can find them on ebay for about £20

the shafts will move in and out, they are locked in by a c-clip. this isn't controlled by the bearing. If the wheel move uop and down or side to side the bearing has play. In and out is normal.

is 5/6 mm on each side in and out play normal ?

5-6mm sounds excessive but as Maudyz28 has stated, the bearings do not control this. You can shim the play out, I've done it to a couple where handling has been important - wheels slopping in and out don't appeal to me on racetracks! Also, if the halfshafts are worn (the bearings have no inner race - run directly on the shafts) you used to be able to buy 'axle-savers' which basically moved a new bearing onto an un-worn part of the halfshaft, making the working areas as new again. You'll need to remove the rear diff cover to access the areas to shim the play out. I've only done first gens but I think the later stuff is the same in this regard so if you get stuck, ask. HTH

would it be the part where the c clip goes that gets shimmed

Yeah , you may find the c-clip worn, on some cars they are know to wear down and drop out (not good for the diff unit) and then the axle is only held by the brakes :O

You'd need to pull the diff cover (get covered in oil) then remove the bolt in the axle that hold the centre in (you'll see what I mean :S ) and then you might have to remove the brake assembly and the axle shaft should push in enough for you to access the C-clip (if it hasnt already fallen out when you push the shaft in wards.

i need to change the diff oil anyway so at least i know what im looking for internaly now
