Hey all,

So i'm trying to figure out what the situation is and then what to do. The fuel tank has two holes in the top, one for pulling the fuel out, the other just has a pipe coming out. It's this second one that i'm trying to figure out. Is it a breather piper or something? It routes all the way to the front of the car, but the previous owner disconnected it at where it runs by the break master cylinder. So i don't know where it should go, or what it's purpose is. I have a feeling it's something to do with evap recycling or something?

So that's question 1, then question 2 is, what do i do with it, if it was already disconnected, it wasn't doing anything? This pipe need replacing as it's rotted in many parts, but i don't want to replace it if i don't need to seeing as before it didn't appear to be serving a purpose due to not being connected to something. If it is possible to not have the pipe in there anymore, then i have the issue of having an open pipe coming from the fuel tank and that worries me for obvious reasons. So would it be safe to cut the pipe near where it exits the tank (need to do that either way due to rot) and then block it off so that there aren't vapours floating about through it?

Pretty sure it's a fuel return line... not quite sure why it was disconnected..

eta..
actually these cars may have a vent line from the tank into a charcoal cannister in the engine bay, to stop the smell of evaporating fuel

Hi Ray, you and chevy-stu have already twigged it. It's a return from the charcoal canister, early environmental measures there! Just block it off if you have no other use for it (like a return from the carb, which can sometimes be useful - we can talk later).

Thanks both! That makes sense and i think probably the reason why the connection was cut off was because there is an aftermarket intake and carb on there so they probably did away with the canister. I saw the recent thread on PCV setup and thought it was interesting. I remember when i got my first induction kit for my Xsara, it came with a breather pipe for the rocker instead of a pipe and it always smelled of oil, wasn't very fun driving around like that. Another kit i had came with the pipe to plug into the intake pipe from the rocker, so that had no smell and sounds like the benefits described were more worthy. I Just checked my engine and i have a pipe going from the drivers side rocker to the PCV port on the carb, so i think that i can take the advice and plug up fuel tank pipe at the tank end. You guys think that sounds like a plan?

Sounds like a plan alright, Ray! Racing is a bit quiet, HSCC aren't racing close enough for me right now and I'm too busy, have Charger in for big work, a '72 Camaro I'm doing a bit on as well as Nigel's occasionally and one or two others. That's in addition to my full-time day job, so my own sadly is hidden in the front garden awaiting my TLC. We did pop up to Donington a couple of weeks back to see the HVRA racing which I am contemplating joining but first my brakes need some improving. Unless I do the next Donington race with HVRA, my only other race this season will be the Finals at Silverstone on 20th October! Not very good considering I have invested in a TD5 Discovery and Brian James trailer to facilitate more racing!

Not good that the racing is too far at the moment :( But at least getting the Discovery and trailer give you a good reason to keep you motivated to get to races where possible. Have you raced it since Silverstone?
