Some updates!

1) Paint had issues on the 2nd respray - still getting pigment flocculation. Most likely because it's a fleet style paint, not designed to be flatted :( Waiting for paint supplier to resupply materials, been about 3 weeks since speaking with them so getting a bit anxious as i want to have it on the road at the end of this month :(

While waiting for paint i am working on:

2) the front and rear suspension. New bushings all round, lowering, new ball joints and general clean up.
3) Fitting the exhaust
4) cleaning up door latch mechanisms
5) cleaning up trim
6) stripping and cleaning up underside
7) dropped tank and repainting, new hangers etc

Whyyyy do i get myself into these things! Am now stripping the under carriage to bare metal. Why. I have covered myself in a combination of tire burnout dust, undersealer, road dirt, sand and paint. I don't mean i just went out and decided to grab some of that and throw it on me - it's from being under the car and scraping and wire wheeling the underside. Only found 4 rust holes, a couple of them only about a couple of inches, so not as bad as it could have been. Still a bit of clean up to do on the places where i couldn't get a wire wheel, so using rust gel to react to the rust and pulling off in that way. Once that's done, new metal going in, ready for some etch and probably raptor bedliner. Then doing the tank, then suspension etc.

You really are a glutton for punishment Ray, you'd have been better off going to a bondage mistress, it would have been less painfull & cheaper :lol: best of luck with it mate, any joy with the paint yet?

Terrible aren't i. Looking back i should have pulled the motor and tranny out, put the car on a spit roast, then it would have been far quicker to do all this stuff, far easier, and i could have done a better job too. hindsight is a great thing :)

still no word on the paint :(

Here's the timeline:

2nd Feb - Company recommend sending tech rep around to check the paint and conditions etc, confirm to provide new materials at no cost as a gesture of good will.

23rd March - Tech rep visits. Time gap here is not an issue - this was because i was away for work for a while so no issues here. Rep takes measurements, pics, says it will take just over a week to get everything sorted. It was a Friday so would expect response around 3rd April

26th March - get asked for additional info, deliver info.

10th April - Still no word, response is overdue so send chase up

10th April - get told that we are "waiting on the powers that be", even though the powers that be already made the decision on 2nd Feb?!

11th April - I acknowledge and ask to be updated when news arrives.

2nd May - Still no reply :( now 1 month overdue. Not happy.

It is such a pain :( but believe me - i'm looking at your build being a far better job - i should have replaced panels as well as this is taking forever and am not convinced by the results. Too far gone to turn back of course, but good news it the etch primer and bed liner arrived today so if i can get some hose fittings by the end of this week, could have the underside coated by the end of the long weekend and move on finally!

So i decided to clean the underside even further back, all the way to the trans :( Very surprised as to how well the sheet metal held up. That waxoyl undercoat will a dirt trap, sure does what it says on the tin! Only a few bits of surface rust here and there, most came of with some 120 grit. The only parts that need some rust converter are around joins i.e where the spring leaf mounts are etc. Plan is to hit the remaining rust with rust converter, the bare metal with 2k etch and then top coat with 2k single stage black, then finish with raptor bedliner, instead of wax undercoat. here's some pics:

Wow, you have a lot of patience to do that! Looks nice though 8-)

I can recommend a great epoxy stuff, would probably hold up better than normal paint and bed liner, cheaper too. :thumbup: Up to you though.

lol patience - i think i must have been a shaolin monk in a previous life :lol:

What epoxy would you recommend? unfortunately i already ordered the bedliner :( as i thought i would get to it over the long weekend, but would be still great to know of a cheaper alternative :)

It's the stuff I am using on mine. Industrial spec, Jotun Jotamastic 87. Its about £50 delivered for 5 litres, more than enough for a floor. 2 coats of that, quick coat of 2k over the top to stop it chalking, then dinitrol chassis wax is what I will be doing to mine.

The benefit being the Jotun is like glue, very sticky and surface tolerant (prep doesnt need to be perfect as long as the surface is sound/solid, and sets absolutely rock hard. It can also be applied thick, about 0.3mm per coat, so its great for all the little fiddly bits underneath. Or can be thinned to run into the crevices. Its designed for submersion in salt water too, so should be top stuff, what they paint cruise liners, oil rigs and tanks with. Google it and have a look at the TDS.
