Hi people.

My name is Dan, i live in Kent and I went a bit mental the other day and purchased this baby from the states, it's a '68 RS non matching [url]http://community.usedcarsplus.com/class ... 62302.html

I broke every rule in the 'buying a classic car' book and my wife didn't help my self control with the phrase "wow, just buy it"

I have previously imported a 74 Dodge Monaco which I turned into a replica Bluesmobile but this is a whole different kettle of fish as I'm trying to make her nice as opposed to making it look knackered like the Dodge.

Now I'm hoping (gulp) that she's all good but I need some advice please.

1) number plate mounting to the front, what do you suggest?
2) what's the rules regarding number plates, it seems every American car I see has yank style plates.?
3) indicators. I'm using shipmycar who are going to get it road legal, but I saw on the web somewhere font indicators hidden behind the front grill so that you only see them when their on.Again any suggestions?

Any other tips/ recommendations/ things you notice from the pics greatly appreciated. (I noticed the damaged oil pan)

Thanks also to peteq1972 for the recommendation of Burnham Autos, I'll let them have a look at her without letting them hotrod her!

I reckon this is a fantastic looking car

I noted the 12 bolt rear axle- denotes a well optioned SS/RS-send me the Cowl data plate and I will have a look at the decode (although 68s are worse of all to decode!)

Being an RS you can use the front marker lights below the bumper for indicators- and same at rear.
You should fit a US style no plate in Black and silver - most MOT guys are happy with same- order the size for a motorbike.
Following receipt of the full numbers I can provide you with a certificate (for a small fee to CCCUK) to enable you to obtain an age related 68 plate etc!

Good to see new labels on those tyres- meaning they are new. (even if they are too low profile IMO for looks and the ride will be horrid- hence the damaged oil pan)

You will defo need a proper 4" air cleaner- that little thing will strangle it
Like the exhaust system- looks good
Also like the stainless door trims- can't rememeber the option code- again only heavliy optioned Camaros get these
Lovely car- take comfort that we all do this

I bought Herman - my E21 B6 Alpina from Switzerland last summer - on EBay - a real gem! Good luck!
Am also very partial to the colour scheme (same as Butch!)

Thanks for the advice. The car is with the shipping line so I can't get to the cowl plate, however I do have the VIN which is 124378n37703 if this is what you need?

So would I be right to assume that DVLA will issue it with a reg number on arrival, but subsequently with your certificate can get me an age relevant plate? But I should get Shipmycar to fit a mounting suitable for a motorbike size plate?

Please let me know how much/how to pay for both the cert and relevant membership fee and I'll get this sorted.

I appreciate your help, and glad you like the colour scheme!

But I believe that you have a number assigned after you have paid customs etc

I shall pm you with info/details for that cert

The VIN no is not suffiient for a build date- it does give the salient info though:
your car was originally a V8, a 1968 model built in Norwood
You may also have to change the front lapbelts for 3 point ones

For number plates I always use States Plates- white letters on black background. same style as US. This is on the '69.

DVLC allocated me the age related plate when I registered it with them in January 2012 (imported in December) so it was not a problem.

I thought that States Plates said that their plates were for show only and as such not 'legal' Obviously would prefer an American style plate but don't want to incur the wrath of the rozzers..or as I should say on this forum..Smokey's/Rollers/Bears.

I used to have states plates on my IROC for the whole 7 years I had it... I think the second set were reflective too, so only issue 'may' have been the font, as you're allowed a smaller plate/lettering if the aperture on import cars won't fit a standard UK plate.

Hi guys,

Thanks for your help so far. Another question for you please. I'm due to pick the car up in a couple of weeks, and I asked the shipping company who also deal with the uk light conversion, MOT, DVLA reg etc wether I needed to bring along fuel additive, expecting it to be set up for leaded fuel. They told me it would run fine on unleaded, but watching a recent rerun of wheeler dealers they were working on a Triumph Spitfire that had engine damage where it had been run on unleaded. I don't want to knacker the engine so how can I tell if it's unleaded compatible?

Any help greatly appreciated!

As long as the valve seats are hardened you'll be fine on unleaded... As they've been using unleaded since 1974 in the US, as opposed to 1988 in the UK, I think most US cars since the late 60's have been OK.

If the engine or cylinder heads have been rebuilt or replaced, you're even more sure of being OK.. worst way, you can buy lead substitute additive if in doubt.
