not sure according to the rebuild books you can't do to much to a 305 engine ,any suggestions its on a four barrelled rochester carb with the old smog manifolds on the exhaust system , on the whole generally a box standard 5.0 high output with a 5 speed box and a LSD in the axle :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:

I guess it depends how much you want to spend on it / can do yourself etc.

The starting points would be making sure it can breathe nicely. Four barrell carb is already a good start, make sure you have a good intake then make sure you have some good headers. If the fan isn't electric maybe change that out to free up a few horses. These should be the more straightforward ones, then i'm sure you can also look at changing the cam then if you want to get more stuck in I would imagine you can do some bore work. Make sure the heads flow nicely with some polishing and that type of work, or maybe upgrade the heads?

headers will be a definate as the old smog control manifolds are a complete pain with the old pipework limiting clearance and they're god damn ugly,got an electric fan already,gonna rebuild the carbs ,hoping to port the heads ifn possible ,what cam would you suggest????
has any one got any new or used headers that'll fit????????
also gonna fit a full gasket kit as the valve guide seals have gone hard, anything i need to look out for whilst i've got this beasty apart ??????

Alright!, this looks promising, good to see theres others upgrading their thirdgens. :) Right as im slowly upgrading my motor i might be able to help with this.

Exhaust:
As you have realise the manifolds are junk and the y pipe is a joke! Far too small for this size engine theres a few possibilites for upgrades can have shorty headers or full length ones. Shorty ones are easier to install but dont gain so much hp as the full length ones. Not any old header will fit up, best to get ones designed for camaros or your end up cutting and welding to get it to fit. So probably your going to be buying from the states, shipping shouldnt be too bad as its not such a large box.

As for the rest of the exhaust theres way too many options can have true duals or merged pipe, as far as i know 3" is a good size for a single exhaust system stock is about 2.25" at most so its a big step up! I think theres a few catbacks available for these cars, but unless u want to ship from the states, which isnt going to be cheap due to the size, then its going to have to be a custom job!

Heads:

Stock heads are economy swirl port efforts not great for hp but people have ported them with great results, depends u want the effort and of course its possible to wreck them! Otherwise theres late model GM versions of the name vortec which have better airflow numbers, though u have to replace the manifold as well since the ports are a different shape and they wont bolt up.

Cam:

The stock cams in these motors are tiny and have really narrow duation of lift, easily gain lots by upgrading here even with stock heads.
Loads of choices on this really though u have to check the maximum lift your springs will cope with, dont think its more than 0.4" but best to check all these things.Also i think its a non roller block you have there, though again i think can check from casting numbers of the block.

Quick question - I've been told that headers will up the bhp but lower the torque. I know with the 5.7 we've got plenty of that, but isn't the torque more use for most folk than out and out bhp?

Increased Horsepower
Aftermarket headers move exhaust gases from the engine more quickly than factory exhaust manifolds by allowing the gases to move more freely. This frees power from the engine that would normally be used to force exhaust gases out. In addition to increased air flow, they create vacuum in a process known as "scavenging." That process pulls exhaust gases from the combustion chamber, reducing the amount of exhaust left in the chamber to mix with fresh fuel and air, creating improved combustion and more power. This is realized at the crankshaft as an increase in net horsepower.

Increased Torque
Headers improve torque by reducing back pressure and increasing the speed of airflow. In a stock exhaust manifold, exhaust from one cylinder can collide with the exhaust from another. This creates "back pressure" in the exhaust manifold that the engine must work to overcome, reducing how quickly an engine can increase rpms. Headers remove back pressure, increasing air velocity, allowing the engine to rev more quickly that assists in increasing the engines torque


Improved Fuel Economy
Since headers can reduce the power required to move air through the engine and improve the combustion of the fuel and air mixture, they naturally improve the efficiency of the engine. The engine wastes less energy pushing out the exhaust gases while burning the fuel and air mixture more completely. The end result is more power generated from the same amount of fuel, with less waste.

Improved Throttle Response
Like with torque, headers allow the engine to increase rpms more quickly. This means faster response to changes in the amount of air introduced into the engine. The engine can pull the air into the combustion chambers faster, which decreases the amount of time it takes for combustion to take place. The time period from when the accelerator is depressed, to the time the fuel and air mixture is burned is reduced, leading to faster generation of power.

Decreased Emissions
Headers help to decrease emissions by allowing fuel to be burned more completely within the combustion chambers. This leaves less unburned by products to be expelled into the exhaust stream, reducing pollutants leaving the engine. Overall fuel efficiency is also improved so less fuel is burned to perform a given amount of work, reducing the overall amount of exhaust produced.

Here are the ones i have brought from the states i,ll let you know if there is any difference when i am back on the road :lol: :lol:

that's a nice explanation from camaro85iroc

Was talking with ChevyStu about headers over the weekend and he was saying that it's pretty much the biggest mod you can make on a small block.
Martin (Sportsroof) on this forum will be able to tell you a good amount about how power moves through an engine. Definitely helping flow through a system will bring great benefits :)

Guys, seriously have a look at the usa site for thirdgens theres a whole host of info on what u can do to sbc engines and really an exhaust system is just the start. Mostly limited by the strength of a stock small block which rumour has is it at about 6-700 hp, depending on the year and mains type, greater than that and theres aftermarket blocks.
