Car Details:Couple of '70 Mustangs
'Evening chaps. I just joined the forum so I thought I would introduce myself as I've already started splattering posts here. I don't own a Camaro at present but had an '80 some years ago strictly as a money maker. I do like 1st Gens and have tinkered with Nigel's (Evilzee28) F bodies over the years. I have Mustangs (ducks to avoid flak) which I race - Nigel has posted pics in the Ford section here. I do know a little about GM stuff and Camaro's so I may be able to help with some of your problems, in case you think us Fordies have a one-track mind and are useless.
Anyone here interested in racing? Not drag stuff, been there, done that. I already know about Mr Boles' efforts and have seen him racing, plus Nigel has been helping me for some years. And Mark from here has ventured to one or two of my days out as well.

Hiya Mart, good to have you on board at last :thumbup:
For those that don't know, I've known Martin for around 30 years now & as far as I'm concerned, what he doesn't know about "our type of cars", really isn't worth knowing. I trust him implicitly with my car & is the only person other than myself that is ever allowed to work on it, or drive it in anger. When he says he's "tinkered" with my F bodies over the years, lets re phrase that, on my '69 he was responsible for determining what parts were required for the engine, suspension, trans etc etc & was entrusted with ALL of the mechanical/electrical rebuilding of the car.

He was responsible for building the engine/mechanical work in my street legal 10 second '55 Chevy & has mechanically built, tuned & maintained ALL of my American cars

His Cleveland Mustang circuit race car is probably the quickest, street legal, normally aspirated, through the mufflers, on "proper" not drag radial street tyres in the country. Not an easy feat by a long shot, as it's not designed/geared for drag racing & standing starts.

I'm sure you guys can benefit from any advice or help that Mart offers. Here's a couple of pics of his car for those too lazy to hunt them out. :lol:

Funnily enough I have always loved the 70 Boss Mustang (hate to admit it!)

Hope you tape your race numbers over on the street?

I see you are running 0032Rs - do you find they go off after 3 or 4 laps in the dry- they certainly do on Butch- now I use them as wets only!

Do bring your race cars to IOM for the Manx Classic?

Thanks for the warm welcomes! Ignore what Nigel says, I'm not that good but I do alright.
Tim: Yes I do cover my race numbers- see the fuel station pic. It may look like the number '1' but it's really a rectangle of black polythene. Anyone who misinterprets this is at fault - I am not.
Yes I do use 032R's but find them to last a long time but then I believe you have substantially more power in your car, maybe that has an influence. Sadly I don't have the money to justify spending for new covers every race or two like some so I struggle by on what I can. This is strictly low-budget racing.
Oddly, we had a highly illegal Camaro like yours racing with us a few years back and he too complained that his tyres lost a lot of grip towards the end of races. He was using 032's or 008's - not sure which (probably both at times).
I only race in the UK, limited by costs so not more than 3 or so hours drive from my home. Rules out Northern or Eastern races unfortunately, and also Isle of Man.
The IOM Classic is not a race though is it? Hillclimb or Sprint maybe? Sorry, used to Sprint but since racing have lost touch with the scene. Maybe one day....

Ahem- steady on! please NB Butch is not "highly illegal" for the events we enter!!! Who was this naughty boy?
We find the 0032Rs go off and keep them for wets (they are after all 11 years old- so I do agree they do last!)- we think it is a matter of weight rather than power? Butch is all steel except permitted bonnet and weighs way too much!

And I still have a set of 008Rs which work fine- they must be around at least 6 years old and still going strong!! When did they go out of production?

IOM stuff is a series of hillclimbs over sections of the TT course

Ooh, much to ponder here! First, I did not mean to imply that your car was illegal, just that the car in question was an early car like yours! I'm sure yours is correct for your racing, but HSCC is quite strict as I'm sure you know and this Camaro outclassed all others simply by ignoring the rules. We can all play that game but it's not really clever IMHO. I was recently considering switching to a '67 Camaro as HSCC allows them to weigh about 2700lb whereas they will not publish weights for Mustangs which means they can always declare a Mustang underweight if it does too well. Mine (also all steel) was last weighed at Donington at 1485kg, what does Butch weigh? I tend to agree that weight should be more of a factor but mine is not light so........
As for tyres, I don't know about 008's but 032's are out of production in 225/60-15 size BUT I am told that Yokohama have enough demand to justify limited runs every year or two so we can still buy them - maybe it's the same for 008's?
I am now looking to tow to races, having driven to them for the past 11 years, so who knows where I may be able to get to. It's mainly the early starts, long days out and the worry of getting home that have forced this decision but there are other factors also as you know. I'll just have to see how 2012 pans out for me. Are you going to be racing in the UK this year?

We are not taking Butch to South Africa this year- I am going solely for business and some R&R without the cars!
