Hello,
I was reading a bit on here about exhausts etc and see that cherry bombs (there called glasspacks aswell aren't they?) don't seem to be very popular. I Got to admit (in my ignorance) when i had them put on along with a new exhaust and new headers i didn't really know much about them. It doesn't have a balancing tube between the two exhausts either, i read that that gives it i few HP and quiets it down a bit. which i dont mind, a V8 is going to sound good whatever. I Went to Burnham Autos (about 5 miles away from me) Paul asked "how loud do you want it?" :lol:
so i just had it done for sound :roll: but now after reading here i'm starting to think about altering it. I had new headers put on because the old ones were hooker and were to big/low under the car (scraped on speed humps etc)
The exhaust is flowtech i think, there was paperwork left in the car, "Stinger" it said on it with a little picture of a wasp or hornet on it.

Is anyone familiar with this exhaust. And would it be a good idea to change the cherry bombs to something else and have the balancing pipe put in?

The balance pipe helps smooth out the irregularity between the two banks, and you can either have X pipe or H pipe..
X pipe alledgedly flows better.
I had an H pipe fitted to my system and it definately smoothed out the sound a little, and reduced the lumpy idle effect. I don't it adds any horse power as such, but it's supposed to help with mid-range torque through better scavenging somehow I think..

Defo go with an Xpipe or a H

We have this both Camaros- see sound -off for how they sound!

as well as an H on the Jeeps

much smoother sound

Best if the exhausts exit 3 feet apart at rear

Cherry bombs are not considered ideal- in a world of flowmasters and the like!

Hi Pete!

if you're the Pete on youtube that's been watching my vids then you'll see the exhaust work i'm doing :)

I used to have factory log manifold into a true dual 2.5" straight system with cherry bombs. The night i got it home the neighbour said he though a helicopter was hovering overhead! I personally don't like loud exhausts any more on my own car (any by loud i mean loud!) just a nice V8 grumble and enough presence to match the car. I do like the idea of being able to have it loud sometimes, so i'm adding in electric cut outs. The system will be headers into e-cut outs, into an x-pipe into flowmasters into an over axle outlet.

I too asked some questions about x pipes on here http://www.classiccamaroclubuk.com/phpB ... lit=x+pipe and got some really great responses.

Mostly it would give a slight increase power because as Chevy Stu said, it balances both sides, and from what i understand, as a pulse waves moved through the exhaust pipes, behind it follows a vacuum, so it means that by having a dual system integrate, that vacuum nowexists on both sides of the engine and this should create a a lsight increase in power. What i read was in in the region of 2-10 depending on everything else going on in the engine. X pipes apparently came about when a photographer captuer a Nascar being catapulted through the air (back in the 70's / 80's?) and someone picked up on the exhaust design. apparently the Nascar team's exhaust guy had been experimenting with differnet designs and this seemed to work. Once discovered, the other teams did this too, or at least thats what the story says. Being a racecar, i would imagine they would only go with something if it added some benefit to getting around a circle faster, so i'm sold on the idea :) Let us know how you get on with yours!

Thanks Ray, yeah thats me you've been watching :thumbup: Your car's comming along great.
Thats an interesting story on the x-pipe, could be true, sounds very plausable.

It's not too loud when running and driving normally, only when it's first started up and when you put your foot down it really starts to roar, i'll have to record the sound for (sound-off here) when it's up and running again (springtime prob)
What TC says about the pipes being 3 feet appart at the rear, i imagine it's something to do with the two pressure wave's interferance pattern being at the optimum places, or something like that i mean i'm not a scientist :lol: just how i think about it.
I would also think an X-pipe would flow better than a H but i'll prob discuss it with Paul at Burnham Autos when i go to get it done.

I run cherry bombs, on a thirdgen and I like the sound. There I said it :). Never liked the sound of them on my mates Dodge Challenger (think it was a 318ci) as it sounded like a wet fart. But for some reason it works for me on mine.

Be loud and proud- just not over the top.

I was one of the first outside the US to use a Dr Gas X pipe!

still working after all these years- now attached to even better engines.

Engine sound off gives you the result- which is more akin to a V10 F1 engine above 5k rpm- it seems to miss the uneven beat- play the sound offs and you will see what I mean

I have to replace the back parts soon- but will keep the original design that works so well

The 3 feet apart exit pipes create harmony!

Camilla runs a complete x pipe and rear exit per stock sytem from a recent set- bought from websters race engineering as a complete kit (sorry can't remember the maker)- sounds OK but not the same as Butch!
