How much do you feel is a reasonable budget to build the car that you want, complete with all the good bits? Also what is the reasonable budget for your car or a good looking Camaro?

The Americans are talking in the region of $70-100.000's for a pro touring car. . I had a bit of a falling out with the Pro touring crowd on the forum a while ago when I questioned the point of spending $1000.00 for a pair of billet hood hinges . They thought I was being a cheapskate 'cos I didn't think it was "good value" they don;'t make my car go any faster, or handle any better so to me they're worthless . Cheers.........Nige

Perhaps there are hundreds of schools of thoughts here but he's the one I subscribe to at the moment.

I don't have anything like £70-100K to build my ideal car. In fact, I don't even know what my ideal car is, it changes every week !!

However, I do like and always have liked the 3rd gen. Firebird and perhaps because it's a bit more unusual than most other cars, I bought one.

I intend to convert it to a KITT replica, external only. I don't have the skills to make an interior conversion and even if I did I don't think I'd like driving with the gull wheel. I'd much rather focus on making the car perform well than spending thousands on a genuine interior. If it comes up for the right price, I'll buy it but PMD seats, dashboards, pods etc are a bit over priced for me. I managed to swap an original 82-83 front bumper directly for a KR nosecone that came with the rear blackout and fog lights already fitted so that was acceptable.

Once the bodywork is perfect I may consider installing a tuned 350 into it and then of course a rear disc beam from a GTA, gearbox etc. but that's about it. I don't think all that will cost me more than £10-15K which mean the family can still eat.

Being a total novice I need to stay realistic, the work that Nige is doing is just amazing for me to see and read about but with 3 young children I do have to budget my time a bit more than he does

I've got 2 children, aged 15 & 9, so they do take up a of of time. I discovered that if I indulged my wife with her longing to own another horse, it'd leave me time to do what I want to do, 'cos then she can't complain that I'm in the garage or spending money on the car:lol: . But I still spend a lot of time doing family things, it's just that I try to manage my time to be the most productive in most things that I do. My kids do Tae Kwon Do twice a week, the wife goes up to the horse so I play in the garage. Same sort of thing with weekends, we have our time together on Saturdays, but we also have our own time, she sees her friends on a Sunday morning I do the same or work on my car. I guess I'm fortunate that my occupation also affords me a lot of "me" time as well. If you want it bad enough you'll find a way to achieve it, Cheers..Nige

Funnily enough, I got a phone call this afternoon for another job. I said I might be interested even though he told me it was part-time !! My first thought being that I would get an extra 4 hours a day to work on the car !

In reality I couldn't afford part time hours but I can dream I still don't have my own garage yet either Get the violins out will you.

Don't worry no offense taken . I didn't take it that you thought I ignored the family for my car, but it is possible if you want to to manage time to allow you to work / play with your toys. Keep her indoors sweet & you can get a way with murder, well not murder but......... , My violins bust but my guitars still work will that do cheers ...Nige

I take my hat off to thee, you have managed it all. Either I'm too lazy or I have not the diplomacy skills you have my friend. I'm getting pressure to sell my cars let alone work on them but like I say, the only one I want to pull apart is the third gen. Firebird and that's currently stored in Slovakia.

However, we're going off topic and nobody else has said a word .

I think the cost of your dream car should be whatever you can afford. I don't agree with sacrificing time or money that the family could enjoy, just for the sake of a car but I do think that if I can be happy doing what I like doing, everyone around me is happy too. I take my boy out in my cars with me and he even comes to the garage to watch me struggle for 3 or 4 hours.

Hi thought i"d have my say on the subject
You car should always cost whatever you can afford, some people can spend thousands on them and not worry about that but personally my car has a limited budget but i try to keep it in good condition so i can use it.
Luckily my wife is understanding and enjoys the car scene just as much as me. I have a 4 yr old daughter and a good sunday show can be a great family day out, as long as the weather this yr is better than last

Looks like the markets dropping in the US now judging by some of the prices on second hand cars. Glad I didn't spend a fortune on mine
