Hi all, I hope someone can provide some reassurance with this question. I have a '68 convertible with 327 that was rebuilt some time ago and a dual point Mallory distributor was added, with heavy duty coil. The distributor has no vacuum advance. I have bought a Mallory electronic ignition module and I wanted to be sure that the wiring on the car matched the requirements of the fitting instructions,so I unwrapped the loom to check. The first problem is that the starter solenoid is wired up differently to the wiring diagram. The white/blue cable on the positive side of the coil should go to the bulkhead connector but instead it goes to the solenoid. I have also noted that the ballast resistor cable is connected in the position where the white/blue cable should be on the bulkhead connector. When the ignition is turned on, the ballast resistor cable gets very hot, too hot to touch. I am getting 8.5V at the positive side of the coil, so it is doing it's job, but I'm replacing it with a universal ballast resisitor as it seems very work hardened and burnt out in places. My question is, do I need to worry about the difference in wiring? It works in that the car starts etc but I don't want to overload the ignition circuit and end up with an under bonnet fire. Hi all Quick update. I've replaced the ballast resistor cable with a normal cable and wired in a new ballast resisitor block. I'm now getting around 6V at the positive side of the coil. This was quite good fun because I had to salvage the spade connector that connects the loom at the bulkhead. All seems well and the car is running. The new cable running from the ignition switch to the coil is not overheating so the ballast resisitor is doing it's job. Next step is to finally fit the electronic module and the small wiring loom that comes with it. I'd still be interested to receive any comments on the wiring of the white/blue cable between the starter solenoid and the coil. Thanks Les Update 17/07/09 - I've fitted this and all seems well. Starts much better now. Next project is a four wheel power disc brake conversion. |
