Just wondering, do 2nd gens have rag joints, or is it a straight shaft with a splined end that goes from the steering wheel to the power steering box? Cheers! |

Cheers! Ok so next question - how long do they on average last, or are they pretty good to leave in place? |

They do last a long time and will continue to do the job after they start to deterirorate. A duff one would add a bit of slop in to the steering, so I guess it depends on how picky you are as to whether you want to replace it. To check it you need to move/remove the plastic cover of the top of the steering box, so you can see the joint. Then have someone rock the steering wheel slightly to see if the movement through the joint is direct or sloppy. |

Thanks Jamie, that's good to hear! Probably will leave things for now then. I remember seeing a conversation with 3rd gens about replacing the rag joints, so thought that with 2nd gens being older, it's more likely they would need replacing. Annoyingly had the column completely out of the car before and could have probably checked easily then. I got a bit worried as i had been moving and shuffling the car around the garage over years with semi flat tyres and probably putting strain on the steering parts in doing so. |
