Hi folks ..my 77 305 has a dual core rad.....I've only had the car a couple weeks...I noticed the expansion tank is empty and doesn't appear to fill with any coolant...should I be concerned?...as no probs on the road..and the temp warning gauge works and has never come on....also I've noticed the level in the radiator was down a few cores...so I topped up but not so covering all of them...there's no "max" mark on the casing so am I right in thinking that it just settles to a certain level which is normal for my particular car?

There should always be some coolant in the expansion tank, never dry.
Mine´s marked at half full for cold, engine hot the level rises a little.
My rad is full to the brim.

Sounds like I need to top it right up to the neck so all the fins are covered...thanks

And put some in the expansion tank.
Then run the motor, get it hot.
It should puke coolant into the expansion tank, let the motor cool down and it´ll suck back into the radiator what it needs.
Keep the expansion tank about half full.

Second that on the coolant reservoir

They are designed as closed loop, you can get the reservoirs new from the U.S which is good news.

Thanks I'd thought about filling the expansion tank......i brimmed the radiator today before going for a city center drive.....no probs during it.......i checked for leaks and none seen....the inlet and outlet hoses were warm too....so the system works.

You should´nt have to take the cap off the rad., just check the
expansion tank and top that up.
