So I have just picked up my 305. I will be ripping out the 229 v6 and keeping my th200 auto box on the car the coupling the 305 to it. The old engine is still in the car. When I split them am I going to have tranny fluid or anything pour out or is it a dry fitting? Also does the torque converter stay in the tranny or come out attached to the engine? If it's on the engine do I need a bigger torque converter or will my old one do the job? Also I believe with the auto it doesn't use a regular flywheel right? That's all part of the torque converter isn't it? With the new 305 I just have the end of the crank sticking out with the 7 or so bolt holes around the funny shaped face. Can I literally just bolt this on or do I need any other parts? Thanks guys.

You need to undo the 3 bolts that hold the converter to the flex plate, then the converter will stay on the transmission, you won't loose any fluid.

The 305 will bolt right up, but I suggest you buy a new flex plate and bolts for it - there are 4 different ones. 2 different numbers of teeth and 2 different fittings. What age is the 305? That will tell us what flex plate you need.

I don't know for certain but I can't see the bell housing from the box that's fitted to the v6 being the same as one for a v8?

From what I can gather the 305s also used the th200. I am guessing they would not have made 2 different boxes both the same but with different bolt patterns so worst case it's a new bell housing with a different bolt pattern to go between the engine and tranny right? Going by the casting number the engine is a 78 or 79 according to the net. The car is a 1980.

I'll have a look tonight when i can access a manual to see the engine / transmission options. The bugger with auto's is that the bellhousing is molded with the transmission case, so it's one complete unit. A manual on the other hand has a bellhousing separate to the transmission case.

I feel safe to say "I'll eat my cat" if a v6 bell housing fits on a V8 (please bear in mind I don't have a cat) :lol:
ETA what about the axle and gear set ? Wouldn't the ratios be different ?

Appears it may be a good job I don't have a cat! My mechanic recons the early v6 was a smallblock with 2 cylinders cut off and the bell housing pattern should be the same, If he is wrong I told him he has to eat the cat himself

My mechanic is building a decent th350 at the moment but it'll be a few quid as he adds clutches and had various internals machines, unless your a track freak I would reccomended a 700r4 when you decide to step it up, much nicer for longer journeys and kinder on your fuel consumption
