Any ideas as to what can be going on with the below? When i turn the key to acc/ run, everything lights up, volts gauge shows correct voltage etc. When i turn the key to start, you can hear a click at the starter but everything dies out, all of the dash cuts out. Then when you take the key out and put it back and turn it, nothing happens. Not even the dash lights come on this time, volt gauge doesn't work either. You have to disconnect the battery for a few seconds, reattach it and then then the dash lights work again as normal, and when you turn the key to start, you hear a click again and everything dies out. And you just repeat the loop over and over. Any ideas? I thought at first it was the starter motor and it was drawing too many amps or something, so i switched it out to a starter motor that i knew was working 100% and started a car each time with no problems. The battery is only a few months old and is over spec... 750cca. Really stuck on this one Cheers! |

Bad connection somewhere , how about the engine earth strap that goes to the chassis? |

I have to check the strap, i'm sure it was on there but will double check. The wires on the starter i know are good as i hooked them up carefully and made sure they were tight. So must be further up the chain. What i don't get is why everything cuts out and as soon as you unhook and reconnect the battery lead, everything's fine again until you try starting it. Very odd. Will investigate the ground strap... |

If you have a bad connection on the power side it will arc and get hot when you try to draw current through it, the arcing and heat will make the connection bad and give the fault you describe. Could be its just the time taken when you remove the battery that allows it to cool and go from being an impossible connection back to a bad one. I would remove the positive and neg power lead connections and clean the area they bolt to with a wire brush and replace them(unless you haven't put the strap back on ) I you don't have the strap from the battery or chassis on correctly (clean and tight) when you are turning the engine over its trying to draw all those starting amps through all the wiring loom connections which would give the problems you are describing. I'm confident it's something simple |
