DOT 3 or DOT 4.
Don't add silicone fluid to a system that has any DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid in it. It will trap moisture and rust out your calipers and wheel cylinders. If you have a dry system, like after a major overhaul, silicone based DOT 5 is the best to use.

Ah okay. I don't know what's in there but I just need to top it up. Am I best just going for some dot 3 non silicone then? :/

Yep, very much doubt there is a silicone one based in your system. I went with castrol react in mine http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Castrol-React ... 4181ec9494 As it's only £1.50 extra and the rule of thumb is to always go for the best fluid you can when it comes to brake fluid (higher boiling temps).

Where possible, a photo sharing service can be used such as Flickr, Imgur etc. The image location (usually ending in .jpg) can be copy and pasted between the ][ brackets that appear when you click the 'Img' button (you can find this button at the top of the message box).

How to post youtube vids: Click on the 'youtubeHD' button at the top of the message box and in the middle of the ][ brackets that just appeared, copy and paste everything from the youtube web address that appears after the = sign i.e if this is the url: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2cNqaPSHv0 just copy "K2cNqaPSHv0").

If you want to go slightly more OTT than the Castrol React, I use Motul RBF600 race fluid which is a still a DOT4 but has an even higher boiling point.

Cool thanks for the help guys. Does it matter if it's synthetic or not? I don't know what's in there now. Can I mix synthetic and non synthetic if that's what's in there? I only need to top it up.

It shouldn't do, most oils are synthetic now, mineral has become the minority. In most cases synthetic mixes with mineral so you should be ok. Synthetic has a base of mineral anyway, so can't see it having mixing issues. I'm no expert though. I added the Castrol React to whatever was already in there, so don't think it's an issue. Mainly the problem is from adding silicone based fluid as mentioned earlier, as it causes moisture problems. Sorry i can't give a more solid answer!

Should be OK to mix mineral with synthetic.... If you suspect the fluid is pretty old it's worth bleeding the whole system to replace the entire with fresh, it'll help your braking..
