Hi all, I hope someone can provide some reassurance with this question.
I have a '68 convertible with 327 that was rebuilt some time ago and a dual point Mallory distributor was added, with heavy duty coil. The distributor has no vacuum advance.
I have bought a Mallory electronic ignition module and I wanted to be sure that the wiring on the car matched the requirements of the fitting instructions,so I unwrapped the loom to check.
The first problem is that the starter solenoid is wired up differently to the wiring diagram. The white/blue cable on the positive side of the coil should go to the bulkhead connector but instead it goes to the solenoid. I have also noted that the ballast resistor cable is connected in the position where the white/blue cable should be on the bulkhead connector.
When the ignition is turned on, the ballast resistor cable gets very hot, too hot to touch. I am getting 8.5V at the positive side of the coil, so it is doing it's job, but I'm replacing it with a universal ballast resisitor as it seems very work hardened and burnt out in places.
My question is, do I need to worry about the difference in wiring? It works in that the car starts etc but I don't want to overload the ignition circuit and end up with an under bonnet fire.
Thanks
Les
