Post subject:  Choice of gearbox

hello from France. I have joined to help a friend who doesn't speak English.
I own several cars and compete in historique rallies doing all my own maintenance. BUT I know nothing about Camaros!!
He has a 1976 model which originally had a six cylinder engine and now a V8.
The gearbox has not been changed (it is a 3 speed manual) and he says it doesn't drive well like that.

What are the options and what is available? Or what should be in there?
Assuming someone has a specific idea on what to replace it with, who would be the most trustworthy to buy a S/H box from ?

Thanks in advance.

The purist choice would be a 4 speed Muncie either M21 or the very rare M22 rockcrusher
alternatively you could find a Richmond or GM Super T10 the aftermarket ones come as a 4 or 5 speed

keep a look out in classic american

or buy a new one from real steel

Thanks for such a quick reply.
If budget is important then what would be the best choice?
The Muncie on EBay that you showed, what would you expect that to go for?
The aftermarket boxes; will they be a straight fit or will bellhousing changes be needed? Same for the Muncie ?
How strong are these boxes? What sort of risk buying S/H. Anything particular to look out for ?
Oh yes and what about the clutch? Will the existing one fit the other boxes?
Sorry if this is tedious...but when you don't know the marque it's difficult!

I have a Tremec TKO500 5 speed in my car, but it was originally an auto, so needs a some work to do it...

The 4 speed M21 would probably the easiest fit, or possibly a T5 5 speed from a 3rd generation Firebird or camaro may fit, but might need some electrics to work well..
