I have a 1st gen with a powertrax no slip diff, some people say use normal 75w - 80 but some say 75 - 140 is better to make it run quieter, would the thicker stuff be ok to use or best stick to the thinner stuff, ive noticed a whine soubd when accelerating but its always done that since i got it so dont know if its normal, ive had the cover off and cant see any damage. No bits of metal in the oil or anything

I have a PowerTrax too and have always used SAE 80w90.
A PowerTrax doesn´t whine just clicks.

I´m redoing my diff at the moment due to a whine on acceleration and deceleration, constant at 80mph.
I used a spacer instead of a crush sleeve and I think excessive preload on the pinion bearings is causing it.
Everything else checked out fine.

I´m afraid looking inside the diff. won´t tell you anything.
You´ll have to disassemble it and look at the bearings, even then you might not see the cause.
