I want to embark on a large project at some point in the future, including having a go at prepping and painting. I have never done this dark art before, so is there a book I can read about how to prep the body etc? I know we have some body gurus on here who could maybe share some of their wisdom? |

I couldn't recommend one specific book to read as most of them cover many different aspects of "the dark art" . The best thing to do is to allow your brain to be a sponge & read up as much as possible from as many sources availabe to you. It's always a good idea to enrol on night classes in body repair at you local college, as they can show you how to weld & carry out repairs etc. Note that I said show you, as it takes a while to "learn" how to do these things, but with enthusiasm & practice anything is possible, but it's knowing how to do these things is most important to the novice. I used to have my own bodyshop specialising in top end exotica/classic restorations, but I'm also a qualified college lecturer in Vehicle Body Repairs. If it's of use to "club members" then I'd be happy to answer questions relating to this (maybe as a sticky?). If a specific question is posted up, then I'll try & answer it in as much details as possible. Everyone can add their advice, thoughts, experiences, views etc to the thread to try to give as much info/help as possible to others? There's endless subject matter that can be covered from the very basics of dismantling a car right through to the final detailing once it's completed. Just keep the questions specific so that the answers given can actually answer the question Hope that helps, cheers..........Nige |

Unless you live on a small rock in the Irish sea, in which case you can do flower arrnaging and watercolours, other than that your local college is useless! Not one auto related course on their programme list. Mayeb I'll buy a junkyard dog and just point a welder and a paint gun at it!

Nige, how about a 10/15/20 step guide to repairing a rusty panel for example ? Obviously step one is to the make a brew, that goes without saying but it's always the first task that I have trouble with. I guess it's something like masking off the area first but how do you know how much/big of an area to mask ? Next I'd probably get the sander out (I did once) and start taking all the paint off, treat the rust with some red oxide paint or similar, chuck a load of filler on and smooth/shape with a plastic carrrier bag (that's a little trick I picked up), rub down, prime, paint and lacquer. Of course that might be totally wrong so I hand over the topic to you sir. My biggest concern is how to shape the filler or the lead. When I start rubbing it, when do I stop (no silly comments please ). Each time I've thought it was right somebody has told me it's not so I end up slinging loads more filler on again. Is it just an eye for details needed or is there a more scientific way I could do it ? I like scientific ways best. |

Just post up your lecture notes! We could have 20 topics on bodywork! I would like to know about "flatting" a car's paintwork (my Roller has a bit of orangey peelness here and there and the body shop guy said it needs flatting, thats easy for you to say!) Also, I've got my Knight Rider fibreglass parts I'm badly prepping for paint, and badly spraying with a rattle can! If there were a course here' I'd enroll, but there aint! |
