Post subject:  Wiring a 2nd tach

Hoping for some help / advise here. PA Fbodies recent post reminded me of something i noticed when i got the car running a year or so ago when i thought it was about finished :wtf:

I have an autometer tach in the dash gauge cluster, but the dash top has had one screwed in (the original dash console was knackered so the previous owner dealt with it this way). Taking it off meant that there were two nice screw holes and and an impression left, ruining an otherwise pristine dash thanks to a quick fix :(

I thought ok, we'll keep the tach and then wire it up. I wired the gauge up as per instructions, lights etc work fine. I spliced the tach signal wire coming, so that it had two destinations. What's happening is the gauge in the cluster works fine, but the gauge on the dash reads funny. I can't remember exactly what it was doing as it was a while ago, but i seem to remember it showing higer revs. If i plugged jus the dash top gauge tech signal wire in (disconnected the cluster one) it was normal. So it seems like the signal wire doesn't like to have two destinations? And i'm wondering why that is. If it's sending a signal, it should be able to be read by more than one device. It's not like a fuel sender for instance where the signal wire isn't acutally a signal wire, it's a ground wire with a variable sensor inbetween the ground signal. Same with oil. So i can understand, if you took oil / fuel and have two gauges reading, they might read incorrect. But this one, o'm not sure how to get around this?

Thoughts welcome!

Thanks,

Ray

I've got my dash top shift light wired straight off the bulkhead block/sender that links from the HEI distributor. Rev counter still works fine..

May be the 2 tacho's work differently, splitting the pulse should in theory make them both read odd or not at all if they were operating in the same way?

Have you adjusted the Tech Tacho to run on 8 cylinders?

Ye it's strange because they are both autometer and the switches are set to read v8 pulses. I will double check of course. The strange thing is i can switch between them on the fly (unplug one, leave the other intact) and they read correct when they are wired up directly, just when the signal is split then one decides it's doing a different RPM. Good to know that it should work, so i'll have another tinker about. I've completely rewired the car all with new loom so i expected everything to work, ah well it's only a small thing. Will let you know how i get on... will be a few weeks at least before the car gets started as the interior is all wrapped up to protect it from dust and paint overspray. Once i'm happy that i don't need to do anymore welding or create body filler dust, i'll give it a good clean out and start it as i'm desperate to hear it run again (been around 2 years!). Then i'll be able to play around the wiring and find out what's causing it.

Cheers!
