Hi guys, need some help and advice. 1996 Z28 Camaro, not had it for long, it's a repair project so has been sat for a while and not been used in anger for months. Up until now it has been running fine (except with battery issues, that was swapped and ran much better). I swapped the exhaust a couple of weeks ago with a Magnaflow one, again, all running fine. Figured I should make sure the cooling system is working as it had to all be removed to repair some damage, so got the car up to temperature, fans cut in and temperature gauge sat in healthy zone. All still running fine. Got all my nice new bodywork from the States, put them in the garage, went to start the car and no - she's having a hissy fit like she doesn't like the new body. Key in, fuel pump can be heard running and all seems fine. It turns over fine, no odd sounds, but no firing. When stop cranking there is a faint backfire in the engine bay, bit of exhaust smoke out the top of the engine (only slight). Something seems really wrong but not sure about the best way to approach. There is plenty of fuel in the engine, and I've even tried some start gas but no luck. Seems to be fuel pressure at the fuel rail check valve (not sure if it's correct pressure as don't have a gauge, but there's pressure there). I'm thinking the car could do with a service - maybe spark plugs iffy? I was playing around in the internal fuse box trying to fix the seat (mission accomplished - one job down ), wondered if I'd knocked a wire directly related to the ignition. Ah so many possibilities. Cancel that, I flooded it :p oopsie I'm not used to the older engines where flooding is an issue, amazing what you can find out reading the manual |

You and me both, I was visualising multiple bills trying to fix it. Hopefully all problems will be that easy to fix |

Ok, I'm still having troubles. The engine does indeed flood from time to time, but feel it's flooding because it's just not igniting in the first place. I should imagine first step is going to be the spark plugs (no idea when the car was last serviced). But are there any other areas prone to problems that might be worth checking? Coil? Distributor? Any advice is welcomed |

I stripped the top end off my motor looking for a reason why the bugger would not idle. When I started the car had a 750 carb on it, so I tried the 650, same results......would not idle. I got to thinking the cam was bad, broken piston rings, all sorts of reasons. In the end I was frustrated as hell, then someone told me to check the carb base to carb body gasket. Even though I was 1000% sure the carb was rebuilt correctly, and a substitute carb yielded the same problem, it was sure enough the wrong gasket. Sounds either a timing problem ( although you said you had it running fine after it did it once?) or maybe leaking injectors? They could be leaking and Flooding your engine before even cranking it. |
