Post subject: | Holding up the rear |
Odd question i know! i'm after some advice on how to hold up the rear of the car based on: Everything is removed - glass, fuel tank, suspension, axle etc, just the body, with doors and trunk lid. What i need to acheive: I've stripped the underneath to metal and repaired parts that need attention. need to paint, but currentyl axle stands are on the chasis rail. Trying to see where i can relocate jack stands to, so can paint in one, and keep the car in the air safely. I'll try add a pic to show what i'm doing. basically painting entire chasis rail and sheet metal around it. the rear seat drop outs are not being painted, wondered if i could put some longer blocks of wood along it to spread the load across the floor board and place a couple of jack there? Hope that makes sense, any help help is much appreciated! |

no unfortunately not. Just 4 axles stands and 2 hydraulic trolley jacks. The front is sat on the wheels still, so really a case of trying to find the best way to hold up the rear to give enough access to get a spray gun in there to cover all the parts. Cheers! |

Hi Ray did you get any pics of the back of your car ? is your rear bumper still on ? do you have any where to tie your car up to, as if you hav,nt got rear bumper on you could always tie it up to a beam or wire it up ? through the bumper holes ,if not paint it then moove your axel stands and paint any bits missed Cheers Neil |

Hey Neil, Sorry wasn't in the garage much this weekend. Should be able to get a pic tonight though. Have replaced the rear with fibreglass bumper but i do like the idea of putting on the steel anchor bumper and propping up with axle stands. Other than that, i'll add a pic tonight of my only other idea, which is to put some 2x4 strips of wood under the floor panel where the back seats go and hold up with axle stands. thinking that if i can spread the weight enough it might be ok? Cheers! Ray |

I tried jacking my empty shell on the rear seat area and it wasn't having it, even with a bit of 6x3 under there, so gave up and jacked it on the frame rails as normal. My suggestion for the engine crane was to just lift it using the rear bumper, assuming your frame rails are solid enough! But you could just use a large jack and axle stands instead. |

thanks for that, i'll avoid the rear seats part then. Just had another thought - what do you guys think to this: I have about 5 or 6 2x2x8 lengths of wood. Thinking of maybe laying them all so that they go across the car and touch the lip of the rocker panels. That way the lip of the sheet metal has less weight as it's spread across several beams. Then putting the axle stands so they sit under the lip, across several blocks. Hope that made sense? Will that be safe? Cheers! Ray |
