Post subject: | engine position |
hi guys, i am trying to work out if the engine im my car is fitted correctly. originally the car would have had a 6 straight but now has a Goodwrench 350 V8 crate engine. The clutch pivot is ligned up fine (between the engine mounted bracket and the chassis mounted bracket) so this would indicate the engine is in the correct position. However, the engine mounts appear to "overhang" the chassis (as if the engine was moved back) and the holes in the chassis cross member used for fixing the gearbox mount are elongated as well. This does not look right to me. Could it be that this is a simple case of wrong mounts (maybe the 6straight mounts where used instead of proper V8 ones?) or is there more wrong? I have been trying to find pictures of mounted engines and where the mounts are in relation to the chassis but without success. Could any of you shed some light on this? there is a 8-10 mm clearance between the Delco-Remis electronic ignition distrubutor and the bulkhead thanks, Kurt |

A simple way to find out is buy some V8 engine mounts, or even get a picture of them and compare them. I doubt the original six mounts were used, as they are most likely a different shape. As for the gearbox cross member - it depends on what was originally in the car with the six, just may be a case of the original crossmember being used, instead of getting the correct one - hence elongated holes. As for distributor clearance, that's always been a mystery why it was put at the back of the engine - it's a right royal pain |

Thought i'd give you an update on this one. I have now found a picture of a front frame with installed motor mounts and ... they "overhang" the same as mine. Looks like that one is ok then! Still not sure why the mounting holes in the cross member for the gearbox have been elongated. I'll keep looking for an answer on that one and post later. Wish me luck, kurt |
